Soul Calbur 4

It would be if it wasn't for the fact that I've guarded attacks (I know about guarding locations) and still had them connect.

That Tower mode is horrific.

Well like I said above, you either:

1) guarded the wrong height or
2) were attacked with an unblockable attack or by a character with an unblockable mod/power

Should dodge it next time...

;)

But yeah, the tower stuff is pretty stinky. As far as the 1 player quest-type mode, I don't think any of them have beaten the one from SCII

Actually I have guarded many attacks correctly that still get through. Ive seen it countless times with Siegfried who is hugely overpowered.

you haven't if they got through it's a contradiction...

either you blocked correctly and then it blocked or you didn't and it didn't... it's pretty much instantatious feedback as to whether you are doing it correctly or not ...

complaining that it's system doens't work when it isn't really the fault of the game but the player is a bit off...

You gotta use different tactics against the big slow guys though, can't expect to do the same thing for everyone.

No i've blocked moves that still launch me into the air or off my feet. It's not a paradox; it's because the guard system doesn't work properly. I can see my character is guarding, it just doesn't actually help me.

Still sounds like you are not making the correct guard to me.

If you are guarding horizontally and you get hit with a launch move, then it is going to connect - you need to be blocking down etc.

Given that you seem to be the only person on the thread, nay, the world with this issue and the block works perfectly well for everyone else then I can only conclude that "ur doing it rong"

I've noticed there's a breed of modern gamer who if they cannot master the intracisies of the game play after the intial pick up and piss about moan that it doesn't work has increased tenfold or so sinc ethe advent of 3 gen consoles...

Are gamers dumding down perhaps... ;) :D

'guarding horizontally'?

Poorly worded - I meant really a "standing" guard.

This might help

Like throws, defensive techniques exist outside of the Triangle System and have the potential negate them completely. There are two forms of defense in Soulcalibur: blocking and guard impact.
To perform a standing block simply press G, and to perform a crouching block press

,

or

+ G. Blocking can allow you to defend against most attacks in the game, but there are three types of attacks that blocking cannot defend against; throws, Guard Crushes, and Unblockables. True to their name, Unblockables are attacks that cannot be stopped by merely blocking; you must sidestep or duck them. Every character in the game possesses at least one unblockable attack, but they are usually slow to come out and thus can be avoided if you are quick to react. Aside from throws and unblockables, players will have a hard time in blocking against a type of attack called a Guard Crush. Attacks that have a Guard Crush property attached to them will have the ability to break through a character's block and leave them open to a followup attack. However this followup is not guaranteed, and the defender can escape this situation or avoid the Guard Crush altogether with Guard Impacts.
Guard Impacts are similar in concept to blocking, but can be much more effective. By tapping

+ G for low or mid hits or
vf5_right.gif
+ G for high or mid hits, Guard Impacts will allow you to deflect or repel an incoming attack to give you the tactical advantage at that moment. Note that Guard Impacts do not give you an actual advantage in terms of being able to perform a move before an enemy can react. If you are predictable with your followup attack after a Guard Impact, your opponent can simply GI you back and continue with their gameplan. Post-GI situations are one of the most important things to learn in Soulcalibur, and will be discussed in later tutorials.
New to Soulcalibur as of Soulcalibur III is the addition of Just Frame Guard Impacts, which gives you a bigger advantage over your opponent and makes it harder for them to Guard Impact back. It's not that simple to perform though, as you need perfect timing in order to get it, however you'll know that you've performed it if your Guard Impact flashes red instead of the regular white.

I know all this, as I said.

The thing is, it's very easy to spam attacks so relentless and quick that even if you do manage to guard correctly (some attacks register in areas other than where they seem to hit; a lot of these low attacks are not actually low hits) you have no window of opportunity to retaliate or move. Even with a Guard Impact (GI requires superhuman timing).

I think it is just you mate!

:D

A GI or a well-timed side step sorts me out whenever I am under a barrage of attacks.

Once you get the hang of the timing, they are not really that difficult - certainly not requiring "superhuman" talents at any rate.

I am getting on a bit now in gaming terms and my reactions certainly aren't as sharp as most gamers in the under 25 bracket, but I don't have any problems in SC....

:hmm:

won on my first battle with softyyoungman, he claimed he let me win.....seems so cos i've just lost twice in a row...:( gave it my best though and nearly won but ....:D
