SOS!!! Save The Spike Surplus squat, Peckham

Don't really know which forum to put this in, but many of you will have visited the fantastic Spike in Peckham, home of famous halloween parties, permaculture gardens and much more...
Please help them out in their hour of need (and please moderators move this to a more appropriate forum, if you think it'll have more success there)

The Spike Surplus Scheme is a community-led initiative in Peckham that has been operating on a voluntary basis for a decade. It was reclaimed from an abandoned fly-tipped site and the land opened up for community activities. In a borough where nearly half the population is poor or borderline poor (according to Southwark Council website), the Scheme is dedicated to providing affordable and free-where-possible services to the local community. The Scheme incorporates a rehearsal/recording studio, a martial arts/meditation/ health space, community garden and much more. It has been largely self-sustaining, relying on donations from local users, albeit mostly in terms of time and skills rather than cash in such a poor neighbourhood. It is truly a vibrant example of community in action. It has thrived thanks to a supportive council attitude and modest grants.

On April 8 2008 the Council Executive decided to auction off the 39B Consort Road (the Spike Surplus Scheme), unless it can raise a minimum of £500,000 within three months.

With less than four hours notice of their intended decision, we pleaded (in our five allotted minutes) for an affordable lease or some more time, but to no avail.

We then appealed to the Scrutiny and Review Committee, again with no success. Please give us your support and sign the petition.

Sign their petition please.

Ah - I thought this was about the London Bridge spike for a minute there! :D

Just to bump this they're holding an open day plus their usual permaculture gardening type thing this sunday from 2pm. :)

Alls Well

Its the motto of the old Camberwell Council, the people who built our house, the people who built the first of what is now called the first "Social Housing" in London. Southwark, inheritors of this legacy are trying to turn this entrie area into some sort of Mini Me Wandsworth - wrong

Who do I get in touch with on the council to point out that they have taken my council tax for most of the last 15 years so they owe me, and people like me, not to fuck our lives up in this mad dash for cash with every square inch of spare space covered in "cutting edge urban dwellings for young professionals" Fuck that there are enough braying tosspots here already - East Dulwich is their natural home, let the,m stay there Nunhedas getting fucked by idiot cube with crappy metal balconies that start to rot after a year.
Leave us somewhere to actualyy live.........

I'm afraid it looks like it's all over:
don't know if you've heard the news but we're sad to say that the Council now have a possession order for the premises.

Sorry we didn't let everyone know details about the court case but we expected it to be adjourned as it was only scheduled for 15 minutes. The judge actually decided to bash it out there and then and although understood what goes on at Spike, he said that it was a simple matter of the Council owning the land and now they want it back.
At the beginning of the week we'd given the Council a proposal to give them 15 grand up front (non refundable), increased to 5% on valuation (also non-refundable) and the remaining within a year. They "utterly rejected" it.
So they proceeded with the court-case and now it seems we must get packing.

We're having a small solstice gathering this Sunday evening for all those who've been involved in the project. Bring food (vege) and your good selves.

RIP the Spike. I never went there myself, but from their website it looked a lovely place. All that work they've done :(

Bollocks. They really made something out of the place. I've only visited a smattering of times, but it always was a hive of good natured creativity. I need to get in touch with some old friends and see where this leaves them

What's the betting it becomes a faceless new build housing block?
:(

As local residents, I'm sure you want to know what the councils plans are, so it does not become fly-tipped, rat infested, trashed, vandalised, etc again.

The Council says they want to use it for affordable housing (isn't it already?) and commercial uses (no more donation based activities then!). Nice, such imagination!

At the possession proceedings the judge agreed the Council had probably been a bit underhand about it all – 2 hours notice before the executive committee to decide whether or not to sell various 'former industrial buildings and workshops', – one of which was Spike! He even admitted that 'one could say they acted in a hypocritical manner'.

Tim McNally – Councillor for Resources – (who has consistently refused to speak to us for the past 4 months, despite repeated requests) said in the South London Press today that he's "glad that this matter has reached its conclusion." Don't you just love people who take pleasure in others misery?

Incidentally, this is not the first 'save the spike' campaign. We found press articles from 1985 to 1990 detailing local people working to save the entire premises (Spike Surplus Scheme is only part of the much larger Spike complex) for the community. We currently have an exhibition here of all the original plans. They proposed a community garden, theatre, café, crèche, workshops, low cost accommodation and more. (Sound familiar?) It would have been great and it seems like they nearly made it but the Council wouldn't wait for them to get the funding (Déjà vu, or what?).

REally is a shame.

shame... lucky they've got council flats to go to...i suppose now they'll have to pass the pain down and evict their "tenants" tho' :hmm:

Renting out bit's of squatted space for profit always struck me as a really shitty thing to do.

nah i meant the people that they've had their council flats rented out to these last 10 years, although i agree with what you're saying here too

the spike surplus scheme of 39b consort road, peckham, London is being evicted as we speak. bailiffs, cops, pcsos and "community wardens" are on site.

after a ten year project in the building which has been in community use for 150 years, the property division of soutwark council have decided to end the project. though they prmosied to give notice to clear the projects equipment before eviction, southwark council gave instructions to get a special court order so as not to give any notice at all.
