sorting out make up..unashamedly female talk

Blusher is pretty much on my 'essentials' list (along with mascara and an eyebrow pencil - and concealer for them stubborn spots, grr!)

But I've got quite pale dull skin and don't have a natural rosy glow so I feel the need to fake it!

But how do you know where to start and stop? I mean, I'm not an idiot, I can find my own cheekbone, but whenever I've tried it I end up looking like Miss Sally from Wurzel Gummidge.

cream blusher is soooooo easy, it's foolproof! i recommend Benefit. just use a teeny blob and dot it onto the apple of your cheeks (the bit that sticks out the most when you smile) then blend along the cheekbone a bit (so you don't end up with doll-style circles!).

I have a make up bag somewhere with all sorts of stuff in it... not been used for a few good years. I really should just chuck it all...
I used to always put blush/concealer/mascara on when going out by dum dum came over once n said i looked horrid n proceeded to smudge all the makeup on my face. :(

NEVER again.

Maybe it's a case of finding the right colour as well - I try to find one that is quite subtle and close to what I'd look like if I did have a bit of a rosy glow!

That and a big brush!

Having said that I'm a new found convert to cream blusher too.

I second the cream blusher motion. I tend to wear lipstick (lipfinity!) and without blusher I often look ill (or goff).
I love make up. It's grown up face paint.

i could never do powder blusher. never ever ever. much harder to get right.

edit: to say something on topic :o - i use kohl eyeliner, mascara (usually clinique but my mum just bought me a lancome one which is rather funky!), and a little base on my nose, chin and under eyes. i sometimes use touche eclat or a cream blusher depending how washed out i look. i've also recently acquired a sparkly chocolate-coloured eyeshadow for the first time in ages so sometimes i use that also.
oh and lip balm - at the moment it's l'occitane.
i've got some other stuff which i should probably chuck out cos i haven't used it for ages, but the stuff i use every day doesn't need chucking cos it wears out before it reaches chucking date!

Now lipstick I cannot do - tinted lipbalm is about as far as I go.

Partly I just don't think it suits me (I've got quite a big mouth and I just think it looks ridiculous!)

And partly it won't stay on my face five minutes - I bite my lips a lot.

The crumblier I get, the more make up I end up carrying around with me. It's getting absolutely ridiculous. My bag is overflowing with the stuff.

I recently spent FOUR QUID on an eyeshadow blending brush and EIGHT QUID on a powder brush. eek: They do make a difference, though. If I bother applying make-up properly I don't look quite as decrepit.

Take a deep breath and go and speak to one of those painted gals on one of the cosmetic counters of any dig department store. Ask them to show you.
You don't need to buy blusher off them if you don't like it but they are out to sell it and they know they have to make you look good or you won't buy it.
I hate having to ask them for advice but in the end it's usually worth it.

Best mate Mogden fancies a go at one of those make up counter things before her wedding in a couple of weeks. Not that she's going to wear what they plaster her in. I've heard Benefit and Mac are pretty good and don't do the cake you with make up thing. Any recommedations?

I think it's a matter of just walking around, and picking someone whose own makeup you think looks good. The girls at every MAC counter I've ever seen always seem to wear a very thick base, with lots of contouring shader and blush, black, white and silver eye makeup, and a scary amount of lip pencil.

I had a MAC makeover once and I thought it looked just awful.

These days I wear a little bit of light-powder-that-turns-into-foundation base (and I have loads of different shades as my skin is completely different colours from one week to the next depending on how tanned I am with gardening and whatnot), a little bit of blusher, black kohl along my upper eyelash line, and a lick of mascara. Oh, and lipgloss. I haven't worn eyeshadow in years as I have very defined eyes already, and I find that eyeshdow always looks a bit much, however light or subtle it is.

I like the sort of makeup where if you sweat or rub half of it off by accident, it still looks fine, if that makes sense.

I fear those women - I have no idea about make up whatsoever and wear it once every few months - it always seems to end up on my chin anyway. I used to be much more adventurous when I was younger but am really lazy about it. I'm sat here with spots that I just couldn't be arsed to cover and have nothing to cover them with at home anyway :o :D

One day I'll get a makeover done....just not now....

Anyway - what happens? Do you just go up and ask them to do your face up?? How long do these things take?

I hear what all the folks are saying about getting rid of old make up, especially eyeshadows etc but i have some that is very old ! (some bodyshop eyeshadows that are from when they first appeared on the highstreet)These must be well over 10 years old, maybe even older !!!!!!!

I have never had any eye infections or the such like, surely if you are the only one using it its not such a problem ?

On top of that, I've got some of mums make up from the seventies (eyeshadow, crap liners). I've had one eye infection ever and that was before I started wearing make up.
I honestly reckon it's a ploy so we buy more.
