There was an article about Sonic Youth in the defunt (and much loved by me) BANG Magazine that summed up my feelings...

Wsan't that an NME offshoot? Bound to be wank.

Sonic Youth do what they want, who cares if ain't pop? Like it or don't like it I say.

'Sister' was one of my first 'alternative' albums, and still one of my favourites. Not crap, but I can understand why today's kids can't handle them :p

a true indie kid bangs on about music they were'nt even older enough (or born) to remember.

I.e some 12 year old girl, with a nirvana hoodie on and a shaun the sheep backpack. FUCKOFF  And they always fucking get lighters out

I say: Joyless, Turgid, Noise. And not in a good way.

With no good melodies. Heck - no real melody at all.
I say: They're fucking brilliant. (and rubbish sometimes, but they try)

Are you just trying to be argumentative or are you bored or something?.

I'm not deliberatly trying to piss people off...

Its just lots of people here think I like Sonic Youth. And I don't. I really do think they're shite. (and unlike most bands i dont like I've really tried to get into them...)

I am recovering from an op thou........

So maybe I am trying to have me some fun. Heh.

Hardly.

BANG was really cool. Especially the first bunch of issues (did trail off towards the end thou....)

Found this while surfing:

"I was told, in a boozey gossipy manner, that NME have got a serious hump and have told bands and bands PR people that they are either a BANG band* or an NME band

Basically NME saying anyone who does press with BANG will find themselves losing serious column inches in the NME"

http://www.thumped.com/bbs/archive/index.php/t-6085.html

So there. :p

Radiohead boycotted NME for years after calling Yorke an ugly dwarf :D

Then eventually he gave an interview, just before HTTT came out - and in typical Yorke style, it made no fucking sense, much to the annoyance of NME. Describing your forthcoming album like, "a broken photocopier being pelted with wet tea bags," probably alienated most of the NME readers.

Only time I ever buy NME is for the festivals or if Radiohead's in... and I keep them :o

I voted Dirty because Sonic Youth deserve to be described by something better than "not crap" and the dirty is as good a word to describe them as IMO

I like Sonic Youth A LOT by the way :D

sonic youth aren't 'indie' though so obviously they'll confound indie kids like yourself who try to like them but fail, so either have to feign liking them (your quote) or despise them noisily and affectatiously (you)

they are nyc avantgardists playing music inspired in varying combinations by television, john cage, nancy sinatra, neu, the fall, madonna, james tenney, royal trux etc etc

so dislike them because they are the most pretentious pop group ever, not because they were trying to please you and got it wrong :)

And I quote:

"Sonic Youth made and still make dreadful music for all those vile, emotionally crippled snobs who both loathe rock and despise pop.... So here it is: Sonic Youth are shit. For deaf snobs. And pretentious idiots. End of story."

:)

Ciccone Youthe - The Whitey Album

Daydream Nation is in the top ten albums ever created.

NYC Ghosts and Flowers wasn't great. Thousand Leaves had some nice songs on though like Hoarfrost. The last couple have been pretty good.

1.Starpower
2.Come smash me said the boy with the magic penis

Great stuff!

But on the other hand all the new stuff since the b side of 100% has been total shit.
