In fact the whole concept of hangin' on the telephone has altered somewhat, since you're no longer a prisoner to the small space that the telephone cord can stretch to, but could instead be making a nice cup of tea or catching a bus at the same time. It doesn't have the same slightly desperate nuance then, does it :(
