songs which mention now obsolete technology

"And try to get it on like once before
When people stared in Jagger's eyes and scored
Like the video films we saw"

Bowie, Drive in Saturday - particularly good because when he wrote it in 1973 videos sounded futuristic and Jagger didn't sound that nostalgic
It was also the first song to mention videos.

erm...

that's why they are called "turbines" not "mills"? :hmm:

"....hurdy gurdy gurdy, hurdy gurdy gurdy, gurdy, gurdy, gurdy, gurdy...." :p

Joni Mitchell - A Case of You

On the back of a cartoon coaster
In the blue tv screen light
I drew a map of canada

Black and white TV is different.

Extending the theme - cue the Inspiral Carpets...

Saturn V, you really were the greatest sight
Stretching out on a summer's day
Houston, it's calling me back to her
An Eagle lands, and a planet full of people raises its hands
All hail the men who will walk up in heaven today

Monochrome TV, all the things you ever represented to me
Take me once more, take me to heaven again

Fact: a mate of mine had a monochrome TV licence for about 20 years, even though he had a colour TV the whole time. He figured he wouldn't be as high a priority for a spin by the licensing crew as if he had no licence at all. It worked.

Talking about this at work today.

Sam Cooke, "Wonderful world" - "Don't know what a slide rule is for"

Boomtown Rats, "I don't like Mondays" - "The telex machine is kept so clean and it types to a waiting world"

Any others?

The Kinks' "Shangri-la": "got a TV set and a radio/for seven shillings a week".

(If money counts as technology).

Just thought of another one. The first line of "Drivin' sister" by Mott the Hoople (1973) goes thus:-

"Eight track machine playing half moon bay/Drivin' in my Volks up on Hampstead way"

Dim all the lights sweet darling
