Songs that were first of a kind or started a sound?

"Like a rolling stone" by Bob Dylan must have sounded really "out there" in 1965.

Some guy has written a book about that song. I've not read it but heard an interview with him last year and he sounded pretty cool. He said every time he hears a recording he's not sure if Bob is going to make it to the end. :D

My Bloody Valentine sounded new to me the first time I heard them. So did 'pump up the volume'.

Im really suprised 'tommorrow never knows' hasnt got a mention yet.
agree- one of the most underrated songs ever, from one of the most overrated bands in history!

- actually it's one of my favourite tracks of all time! :)

but trendsetting?
can't say that many bands picked up on the "reversed loop/backwards sound" trend at the time! (or at least so it appears to me, not that i was even born yet in the 60's, mind you!)
in fact it mustn't have been until hip hop/house/turntablism era that things like this entered mainstream consciousness, if we omit the reclusive genious producers like joe meek et al...

If you listen to the instrumental "On the run" on Pink Floyd's "Dark side of the moon" it sounds suspiciously techno-y for 1973.

that was the tune i was thinking of. I watched a docu on the album last year and they said that it was probably the first time a repetitive beat had been used to make one tune. i.e fashioned the way for the type of tunes decades later. might be true, might not be. be good if its true though.
