Songs that sound cheerful but are really quite dark!

Isolation by Joy Division, very easy to bounce around
to but grim as fuck.

Good call..

There is a Carter song with lyrical delivery that matches this really well.
The words are interchangeable, try it it's fun.

I gave you my name and independence
and the best seven years of my life
With twelve months suspended from sentence
and fifty two lovely black eyes

Isolation Isolation

Mother I tried please believe me,
I'm doing the best that I can.
I'm ashamed of the things I've been put through,
I'm ashamed of the person I am.

What's the carter song?

Foster the People's 'Pumped up Kicks'.. All joyous melodies and lovely whistling.

Actually about a kid walking through a school shooting other kids.

Pedantic note: isn't it a shopping mall, rather than a school?

Good song, though.

Cheers, just had a listen and yeah, you could splice those vocals
onto Isolation.

There's lots of very dark cheerful folk songs. Eg Old Woman from Wexford - a good ol' jig about murder with a twist:

Thin White Rope - "Macy's Window". The tune itself is upbeat, but the song is about loneliness and despair:

Not so much cheerful, but most people seem to think this song is about fucking and ignore how melancholy it really is:

These lyrics especially:

Whenever blue teardrops are fallin'
And my emotional stability is leaving me
There is something I can do
I can get on the telephone and call you up baby

[...]

Baby, I got sick this mornin'
A sea was stormin' inside of me
Baby, I think I'm capsizin'
The waves are risin' and risin'

There's a sense of sickness and longing that seems really dark to me, especially given Marvin's situation at the time the song was written and recorded.

Has anyone said "Every breath you take" by the Police yet? It's a very popular wedding choice, but is actually about a stalker: "every breath you take, every move you make, I'll be watching you".
