Songs that sound cheerful but are really quite dark!

When my cousin Katie was 6, she used to like her big sister play the Banshee's 'Happy House', as she thought it was all lovely and happy! :D

TOM LEHRER - We Will All Go Together When We Go (jaunty comedy song about forthcoming nucler holocaust).

That is a strange strange tune/

The love I lost by some house act...bouncy happy tune, lyrics about being dumped and never being able to love again...

"Do You Realise?" by The Flaming Lips

"Do you realise that everyone you know some day will die?"

That is a happy song

I always thought 'evil will prevail' had quite a jaunty tune

Nah, definitely 'my'. 's about buying smack in Harlem.

Ummm... Can't think of many. Well except the Pixies, who practically made their living doing it.

The title is "Waiting for the man" but he sings my throughout.

or what about?...

"Ruby" by Kenny Rogers, which sounds like a bouncy little country number, but is actually about disability, cruel infidelity and the thwarted desire for murderous revenge.

I was at a wedding function last month and the bride and groom's first dance was to The Cranberries' Linger.

I swore I swore that I'd be true
But hang on so did you
So why were you holding her hand?
Is that the way we stand?
Were you lying all the time?
Was it just a game to you?

It's a great song but what the fuck were they thinking?
:D We had Bad Manners's Special Brew as part of our wedding ceremony.

Yeah it is a fairly happy song, except that line. Kind of caught me off balance the first time i properly listened to it.

A couple of my mates years ago had "Good Riddance/Time of your life" by Green Day played at their wedding

Lyrics matter people!

Why's that so dark then?

The hysterically ironic delivery of "optimistic" sounding words - e.g. "there are problems in these times/but (shriek) none of them are mine".

We had "Days" by Kirsty McColl in the church at our wedding. :D :D . My wife's sister sang it. We choose it because we both love the song.

We realised the words weren't totally appropriate so we changed them a bit. We made the "you took my life" bit and made it mean that we took each others lives forward into marriage to make each other more happy.

We need not have bothered though, no fucker had ant idea of the meaning of the song.

"Do you realise that everyone you know some day will die?"

But that's just at the beginning. He goes on to say:

"You realise the sun doesn't go down.
It's just an illusion caused
By the World
Spinning round"

I think it's quite optimistic.

Most of my favourite songs are boppy little numbers about death, decay and despair. But that's mostly because I really like the Pixies and the Smiths.

there's one i can hear in my head but i can heck think of the name

That's not a dark song, its a happy song about living life.

I think a lot of jaunty Elvis songs represent the "dark" side of love;

Marie's the Name
Girl of My Best Friend
Suspicious Minds
Devil in Disguise
She's not You
Return to Sender

Back
Top Bottom
