Songs that bring a tear to your eye

Bjork's Joga & Gillian Welch's Elvis Presley Blues always get me.
(& PJ Harvey's White Chalk recently)

Dolly Parton's I Will Always Love You.

Joan Baez - Diamonds & Rust.

Billy Bragg - Must I Paint You A Picture.

Willie Nelson's version of You Were Always On My Mind.

Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds -- The Ship Song. Again, always at the same point: - "When I must remove your wings, and you must try to fly." :o

Raynard the fox -- a traditional song about foxhunting narrated from the fox's point of view. ("It was by stony fields where they killed me, How the bloodthirsty hounds they did holler, They tore my old jacket to pieces...."). Lovely modal tune also.

The good old way -- a Primitive Methodist hymn, last verse starts, "And far beyond this mortal shore, We'll meet with those who have gone before, And shout to think we've gained the day, By marching in the good old way." Again, a wonderful tune.

There's loads more. :o

I'm a hard man. Only a pansy would cry at music. However, one particular song brought a beer to my eye. This girl actually spat beer in my eye when one of our favourite songs came on

you know what, i've got the original of that on the LP by The Family but i don't think i have ever listened to it since the Sinead O' Connor version came out. really must dig it out and compare the two sometime.

i wouldnt bother with The Familys version tbh, as its a very banal take on a fantastic song -its the oldest version, but REALLY poor compared to Sinead O connors haunting tearjerker, or Prince and Rosie Gaynes amazing version.

You've mentioned that Billy Bragg tune before, maybe here maybe somewhere else.

God, I was in the car tonight with Take That's new cd on and I was listening to a song called "What is love" - it made me cry!! :(

Apart from that.....

There's a couple in Les Mis that bring me to my knees and 'in the ghetto' usually does it.

Actually, I'll cry at lots of songs..... :o

'Party fears two' by The Associates has a melody that gets me quite emotional. I find it both extremely uplifting and quite sad at the same time.

Yeah, same here..I love that song
Orange Appled by Cocteau Twins has the same effect on me too, both uplifting and sad.

Lots of Music gets me welling up...

Arcade Fires...backseat...from the Funeral album versions good but this version gets me everytime.... not note perfect but who cares with a song like this..

Flaming Lips - (waiting on a) superman always gets me ...

But especially like this amateur cover on youtube which is rare as I dont usually like covers of The Lips stuff but it gets me everytime even though she uses too much reverb it captures the feeling so well

hhhmmm...yes, i was thinking it couldn't be that good otherwise i'd have remembered it being so and would have thought "oh, that sinead o'connor's version ain't a patch on the original"

Prince and Rosie Gaynes version? what's that on? don't think i've ever had the undoubted pleasure of hearing it?

Give me a little more time by Gabrielle. Mostly for personal reasons. Will explain if asked but would prefer not to. (waves to the person concerned ) :(

Silly Games - Janet Kay. Personal reasons also but I would give anything for the chance to wave at her again.

Nessun Dorma, especially when sung by Pavarotti. The most beautiful piece ever. And the last song that made me cry.

http://uk.youtube.com/watch?v=ONUCPKdGcrk - sounds not too great though.

Also, for years Sway by Strangelove used to get me. It was played at the funeral of a friend of mine from my teens, and since then has always been that song, you know.

Oh yeah, Pavarotti singing that is irresistable for a bit of sobbing.

Actually I wouldn't say irresistable, cos I just listened to it and didn't even well up. But on occasions I have done alright.

Chamber choirs always make me cry. I don't know why it provokes such a dramatic reaction in me, but hearing massive harmonies makes me feel really overcome and I can't talk without my voice breaking :D
