Songs About Prostitution

Madonna- Material Girl

This one, along with "Diamonds Are A Girl's Best Friend" from Gentlemen Prefer Blondes are in the songs about savvy (or shallow or both, depending on one's perspective)-women-who-use-sexy-wiles-for-power-and-material-wealth category as distinct from the streetwalker/hustler anthem/lament category.

I can't believe I haven't come up with a song about male prostitutes yet...

Anyone?

Sweetie, come ON! ;)

Pet Shop Boys - Rent.

Thank you, thank you. I know, I have totally reneged on my responsibilities as a practitioner of the queer arts/(girl)faggot/fruitfly/etc.

(but, hey, at least I brought musical theater into the discussion)

:p :D

Just 'cos she dances go-go
It don't make her a ho, no
Maxine, put your red shoes on
We going to the disco
We gonna elope to Mexico
Called up my mama, said I'm in love with a stripper, yo

Wyclef Jean - Perfect Gentleman

great song

Just a few that come to mind;

"Killer Queen" by Queen

"Mystery Song" by Status Quo

"Sweet Painted Lady" by Elton John

Bloody bumped threads! I just read through it thinking, oh I wonder if anyone's posted Fancy by Bobby Gentry. Only to find that I had. A bit of a Quantum Leap moment.

"Nothing Good" by Ron Sexsmith

at least that's how I interpret it
It might not be about that at all
its pretty ambiguous

Most of Steely Dan's "Can't Buy A Thrill" right down to the artwork...have look; it's how prostitutes in brooklyn looked in 1972.

'Most of...'? :hmm:

The cover artwork features a picture of prostitutes (-from the late fifties?), and ties in with the album's title, but I'm really struggling to think of a single song on the album that's actually about prostitution.

It's a great album though. :)

first random lyric from Dirty Work
"Times are hard
You're afraid to pay the fee
So you find yourself somebody
Who can do the job for free "

Steely dan are a bit more subtle than most but I read an interview with fagan a long time ago that alluded the whole album was about that; subversive pop!

I've always thought of that lyric as either about a no-strings extra-marital affair, and/or a comment on the folly of electing low-taxation politicians who still promise you the earth. :hmm:

But then, as you rightly say, Steely Dan are slippery beasts... ;):D

:)

Can't believe nobody's added Rocks by Primal Scream yet. Then there's the entire Rilo Kiley album Under The Black Light.
