Songs about Prison

ok ok yes it makes a hell of a lot more sense now.....<feels a bit shamey realising he still doesn't understand the ratchet line>

54-46 That's My Number
1968 single

I said yeah, listen what I say
I said hear me now, listen what I say
They said stick it up mister
Hear what I say sir
Put your hands in the air sir
And you will get no hurt mister
You do what I say sir
Just what I mean sir
Get your hands in the air sir
Then you will get no hurt no
I said yeah, listen what I say
I said hear me now, listen what I say
Second thing they say I must join the officer
Third thing they say
"Son, give me your number now"
He said "what's your number?"
I don't answer
He said "what's your number man?"
I don't answer
He said "what's your number now?"
He said "what's your number now?"
I said "hey 54-46, that's my number"
"54-46, that's my number"
I said yeah, listen what I say
I said hear me now, listen what I say
"Stick it up mister, hear what I say sir"
"Get your hands in the air sir, and you will get no hurt sir"
He said "Turn out your left pocket"
"Give me a clean search sir"
"Take off your shirt sir"
"I ain't got no ratchet now"
"Stick it up mister, hear what I say sir"
"Get your hands in the air sir, and you will get no hurt now"

it's not ska :p

I'd say it is closer to ska than reggae, it has that Laurel Aitken air to it. But this could be like a dnb and jungle argument :D

not really - the ska > rocksteady / bluebeat > reggae timeline is a lot clearer than the D&B / jungle one.

Ska is fast.

i think i know the song you mean subversplat, but i can't for the life of me think what it's called....
Hey, that's a start! At least I'm not imagining it.

Anyway, I've thought of a sub catagory in my own thread of songs about going to jail because of drugs:

Cocaine Blues - Johnny Cash (yet again!)
LSD - Wendell Austin

Four Walls (Cold Chisel)

They're calling time for exercise
Round her Majesty's hotel
The maid'll hose the room out
When I'm gone
I never knew such luxury
Before my verdict fell
Four walls, washbasin, prison bed

Well the Bathurst riots ended
When they clubbed the rebels down
And in every congregation
There was silence
You can hear the Angels singin'
When Christmas comes around
Four walls, washbasin, prison bed

I love to march while some Nazi calls the time
Who'd wanna go home

I can't see
I can't hear
They've burnt out all the feeling
I've never been so crazy
And it's just my second year
Four walls, washbasin, prison bed

**************************

Love this song.

Tom Waits - Christmas Card From a Hooker in Minneapolis

One of my favorite Tom Waits songs.

"Rotting On Remand " by Billy Bragg

"The File" by Bob Lumis. I remember hearing my Dad play this when I was little.

I got stripes - Johnny Cash
The wall - Johnny Cash
25 minutes to go - Johnny Cash
Give my love to Rose - Johnny Cash (technically about a release from prison)
and, just for a change: Jailbreak - Thin Lizzy
