Songs about "coming out" as a gay.

Pet Shop Boys - It's a sin (not the most positive tune tbh)

Just checking - you realise the lyrics are ironic, yes? I wouldn't say it's not positive - Tennant's mocking those who think he should be ashamed, to the sound of exuberantly camp synth-pop. Fairly self-affirming if you ask me.

Someone with a better knowledge of opera might be able to name that really famous (used on loads of adverts and stuff) duet between two women where there's a strong undercurrent of forbidden love. But it's not really about coming out.

And does anyone know if there's any truth in the persistent rumour that Jolene is actually sung by a woman to the woman who her husband has recently decided to become - making it a song about coming out as a transvestite/transsexual?

The Flower Duet from Lakme by Delibes doesn't have a gay subtext though the opera is about forbidden love, crossing boundaries of religion, race and military duty. It has been used in the scene where Catherine Deneuve seduces Susan Sarrandon in The Hunger, which is what gives it a girl-on-girl reputation.

It's a big tune, especially the extended live version.

However I think 'Terd Wanker' by Passenger of shit is particularly apt.

When I look back upon my life
It's always with a sense of shame
I've always been the one to blame
For everything I long to do
No matter when or where or who
Has one thing in common, too

It's a, it's a, it's a, it's a sin
It's a sin
Everything I've ever done
Everything I ever do
Every place I've ever been
Everywhere I'm going to
It's a sin

Ironic? Maybe, but seeing the lyrics written down removes any irony for me cos i know of people who've been thru life struggling with exactly what he's describing. It is quite a juxtaposition b/w lyrics and tune, yes, but i think it captures strongly the guilt-trip that is often there.

Altogether now: :D

"Sing if You're Glad to Be Gay"

Tom Robinson is no longer gay of course.

That was (unofficially) banned by the BBC - how times have changed.

He always said individuals fall in love with individuals, and that he still considers himself gay and in love with a woman, so sounds bisexual to me.
