Someone has stolen my bike

Arse! That's awful, Geri. I'm lucky in that I have a big fat D-lock but my bike has a rack so I just attach it to that and it's no bother. I'm not the type of cyclist that worries that much about extra weight affecting speed and that sort of stuff, so it's fine. Maybe if you get a new bike you could do the same?

If you're broke a bike could be your only form of transport and losing it hit you very hard, but if you're stinking rich you just wave your insurance wad around and a new car is yours.
Do no poor people drive then? Do all insurance companies always pay out full values, without hundreds (maybe even thousands) of pounds being removed for excesses?

Sounds like a "your insured, what the fuck are you moaning about?, victimless crime" argument ...

I used to have a bracket for a D lock on my old bike, but the ones I've had recently are so small I can't fit both a water bottle bracket and a lock bracket on them.

Please don't put words in my mouth. Thanks.

The point was that to some poor people losing a bike is a really big thing, regardless of its lack of financial 'value' compared to generally more expensive cars.

I´m convinced that a beefy chain plus d-lock is the way to go with bike security. To get through that pair, you´d need a lot of time and kit, and I doubt most thieves would bother unless the bike was really special.

I was looking at locks today, and I swear some of them are as heavy as my bike itself!

Which world are you living in ...

They haven't routinely fingerprinted stolen vehicles for years .... (and how, exactly, would they have "dusted for prints" when you reported your car stolen anyway ...)

I live in this world, baby. :p My last bike was stolen from my storage shed and not from a rack on the street. The cops could have dusted, but they chose not to.

Tis a cunt when realisation sets in. Has happened twice nd both time I have impotentley looked around for the cunts what done it.

Got a new bike a month ago, with a Kryptonite D-lock with cable for the front wheel (back ain't quick release but the cable goes through tat too). I use to have a fat chain with fatter lock (both kept old bill at bay at plenty of squat partys) - should I add that to the armary when left at train station all day?

Update - Halfords can't get a Marin (surprise!) so my insurers have authorised me to replace it myself. The local bike shop have ordered one for me and I should have it by Wednesday or Thursday.

I would recommend an Abus lock, they do various locks and so on, with a range of levels of strength. Some are a bit heavy but they're also very effective ime. Like say, a decent bike shop should be able to give you some advice about the most suitable model for you.

For someone to cut through your lock in broad daylight in such a busy area, it suggests ...I dunno... a certain audacity!
not really. most people dont give a fuck if they see a bike getting nicked and this is evidenced by the amount of bikes nicked in broad daylight in town centres. they did a test on waterloo bridge in London where a guy locked his bike up, then filmed him with a hidden camera trying to steal it. he had a hammer, a saw, bolt cutters etc and was doing it in broad daylight in rush hour - most people just walked past and ignored him, with a few quizzical looks thrown his way. i've never had the fortune to come across a bike theif, but if i did, they'd feel the thick end of my D lock!

you should use a D lock always and a second lock if poss. the best way to carry a heavy D lock is on a bracket attached to the bike itself - you'll soon forget it's there, and it'll mean you always have your lock on you.

most thieves wont bother with a well-locked bike and I reckon a really good D lock and a second lock prob gives you about 95% security or better. Just dont leave the D lock flush to the ground where it can be smashed open with a lumphammer.

What I used to do when I went to the gym (which is in quite a dodgy area where I had one bike stolen previously and the seat post stolen) is lock it to the bike rack with a D lock from the frame, then a long cable combination lock (the one that got busted off the bike this week) around the back wheel, frame and bike rack, and another cable lock from the front wheel to the frame.

I think I am going to get one with a bracket, I noticed some of the brackets go alongside the bike now so I might have room for one *and* a water bottle cage.

so much for cctv deterrent (i haven't been to broadmead for ages but i think it has some) - otoh there might be some video of your bike being taken, and you'll have to report to the old bill anyway to get crime number for insurance.

My boyfriends bike was stolen outside Leeds civic hall, directly under a CCTV camera, when the police asked for the footage, the council/ company running the CCTV refused to give it.

What the fuck? No wonder these thieving bastards are stealing in broad daylight, they know nobody is going to catch them.

Bike thieves are scum of the universe.

There is no reason why they should refuse it. The council clearly didn't know what the fuck they were talking about. (And the police if they didn't persist with their request). It's usually the other way round, in fact - the council are only too happy to supply footage but the police haven't got the resources to watch it. :(

Update! Got a call from a policeman yesterday, who said he had three thefts in the area to investigate (maybe the other two bikes that I put mine by!) and he is trying to get CCTV footage, but there is some difficulty getting the machine to play it or something. Anyway, he is going to "keep me informed." I'm not holding out much hope of any developments but I'm impressed that they seem to be making an effort.

It was the company the council employ. I don't know why they wouldn't give it up, it makes you wonder (was something actually not working??)
Surely if there'd been a murder they'd had to give up the evidence. What else is the point in having CCTV??
You'd have thought the police could have put a bit more pressure on them. Sounds like a bad case of Can't Be Arsed all round.

I hope Geri has better luck.

my bike's just been stolen too :(

I was thinking of getting a new bike anyway, but now I have no bike at all. I keep wondering who has my bike now and whether it's ok.

These motorbike locks are good, and they double up as kinky toys.

I did that as well - I kept staring at people on bikes to make sure it wasn't mine. :D

I've forgotten all about it now as my new one is so much nicer - even though I thought my old one was the nicest one I'd ever had.

This and the fact that it's so easy to cut through cable locks for these guys I guess they just make it look like they are unlocking their own bike.

Moved to Hackney in October and being naieve locked my bike (semi carbon Kona Racer, uninsured) up with a cable lock outside the Town Hall on my first day at work...it was gone within an hour, full daylight outside the Council offices.

Heavy duty D-Lock and a couple of cables is really the only way to go if you want security. I understand the weight issue but there is not really a way around it. The other possibility is a heavy duty chain lock which you wear...but they are even more heavy.

Sorry for you, it's really sickening feeling as you know pretty much there is no recourse and nobody to vent on either.

Sorry to hear that. It's a fucking horrible feeling to walk out of a shop and first see that space where your bike should be. I always use a thick chain lock and a d lock and never leave my bike out of sight for more than five minutes these days.
