Why didn't s/he just say ethnic groups or races then FFS?

It's true the "smile signal" doesn't work too well round here. Dunno why, really. Maybe it's taken as a sign of someone from the government who's here to help. Or of a cultist or chugger. They smile a lot at complete strangers as well.... it does seem that a smile would not go a miss.
All I can suggest is that it's best to keep deadpan until some rapport has been established. You'll find folks are friendly and do have a sense of humour. I think it's just that using a smile in an attempt to achieve rapport comes over as false and insincere to many people around here.

Now, if you inverted the colours (so it was black people in Brixton who were different), I suspect the subsequent responses would also have been different. Maybe something about condemning an entire ethnic group based on a single anecdote.I don't want to sound racist, but white people in Brixton are certainly 'different'.
Earlier this year I had a white lady in the busy supermarket I used to work in Brixton, me personally am asian but she was served by a black lady. Anyway, minutes after getting to they till she went coo coo! She called my cashier a 'stupid black bitch who bought aids into the country and should go back home'. I was standing behind the produce rack laughing too hard to do anything about it.

Does anyone think to do this in Brixton is suicidal?

But as it stands, you're pretty safe from . .. the Offendaratiri !!!

White Brixtons. I say that only because me or my staff were racially abused at least once or twice a week. 99% of the people were white
get over it!!!
This thread is confusing.
As far as I am concerned Brixton is full of nutters of all nationalities..some of whom are aggressive and some just downright crazy.
I agree this thread is confusing. There are rude people - of all nationalities - all over London. I haven't noticed Brixton is any more politer/ruder an area than elsewhere, tbh.

I dunno, but it's terrible manners
What's your 'nationalty'? Cos a nationality isn't the same as a race.Valid points made. But I have worked in 10 different stores all over London for a major retailer for 12 years. I never had 'as much' abuse as I did in Brixton.
But its supprising its mainly from white people in an multi cultural area like Brixton.
I have had other asian people calling me racist names as well even though they are the same nationality as me. And I have also seen white people abusing white people.
In my last store in Brixton, a portuges collegue was called a 'fucking imigrant' by a white lady who had darker skin than he did.![]()
Im sorry.........but there seems to be so much anger in Brixton isnt there.
