Some nationalities seem to have so much anger

I think that was rhetorical.

Sounds like the OP is new to the area ...
... it does seem that a smile would not go a miss.
It's true the "smile signal" doesn't work too well round here. Dunno why, really. Maybe it's taken as a sign of someone from the government who's here to help. Or of a cultist or chugger. They smile a lot at complete strangers as well.

All I can suggest is that it's best to keep deadpan until some rapport has been established. You'll find folks are friendly and do have a sense of humour. I think it's just that using a smile in an attempt to achieve rapport comes over as false and insincere to many people around here.

What a grim attitude to face the world with. I don't find that people in Brixton are wary of people smiling at all.

'Grim-faced and dour' pretty much sums me up! :p
My smile has even been known to frighten horses :(

But seriously, the OP is far from alone in having had that sort of experience. I've heard people make the same complaint on many occasions.

I'm happy to hear your experience has been different, of course.

I don't want to sound racist, but white people in Brixton are certainly 'different'.

Earlier this year I had a white lady in the busy supermarket I used to work in Brixton, me personally am asian but she was served by a black lady. Anyway, minutes after getting to they till she went coo coo! She called my cashier a 'stupid black bitch who bought aids into the country and should go back home'. I was standing behind the produce rack laughing too hard to do anything about it.

Does anyone think to do this in Brixton is suicidal?

Now, if you inverted the colours (so it was black people in Brixton who were different), I suspect the subsequent responses would also have been different. Maybe something about condemning an entire ethnic group based on a single anecdote.

But as it stands, you're pretty safe from . .. the Offendaratiri !!!

Fuck whether it's suicidal, it's just plain ignorant and the white woman deserves a slapping

You really don't see the irony of you trampling around the boards for the last month or looking for things to be offended by do you?

No, I don't. But I am truly blessed that you're here - again - to help me find the righteous path away from my offended ways.

That was my oyster card. You looked like the sort that steals things. Sorry if I offended.

This thread is confusing.

As far as I am concerned Brixton is full of nutters of all nationalities..some of whom are aggressive and some just downright crazy. Even today some woman practically shoved me off the bus in her hurry to get off...when i looked back at her to see what possible reason she could have for hitting me repeatedly in the back with her shopping i noticed that her eyes were looking in different directions and she was nodding at me fervently. I have no idea what nationality she was.

I'm not saying that everyone who lives in Brixton is nuts..just that we seem to have more than our fair share.

..and yeah..black people can be racist too..against white people or each other. Has anyone else come across the guy at who lurks around the number 2 bus stop outside Woolworths going on about the Irish?

I totally agree that there are lots of mentalists in Brixton.

I have noticed at least 3 white and 4 black ones. Sorry but am not a cultural expert do could not identify nationalities!!

Last incident was on the bus and a woman asked another man on the bus for the time. He didn;t have it so I said it was 10 past 10.
She turned around and spat "I wasn't asking you" at me. Then accused this little old bloke of looking like he was going to kill her.

I don't think mental illness takes account of natioanlity and unfortunatley there is a concentrate of it in Brixton (mental illness and nationalities)

I agree this thread is confusing. There are rude people - of all nationalities - all over London. I haven't noticed Brixton is any more politer/ruder an area than elsewhere, tbh.

Brixton can be a very rude, aggressive and angry place. There's also a lot of povery and deprivation here, which I think partly explains it.

Valid points made. But I have worked in 10 different stores all over London for a major retailer for 12 years. I never had 'as much' abuse as I did in Brixton.

But its supprising its mainly from white people in an multi cultural area like Brixton.

I have had other asian people calling me racist names as well even though they are the same nationality as me. And I have also seen white people abusing white people.

In my last store in Brixton, a portuges collegue was called a 'fucking imigrant' by a white lady who had darker skin than he did.

What's your 'nationalty'? Cos a nationality isn't the same as a race.
