solid state hard drives -yeah / nay?

is this kind of thing going to be a concern in Yorkshire? or on public transport?

what are you going to be using it for anyway?
why the need for speed?
I'm working with 22 councils across yorkshire and humberside for an environmental charity, so will be attempting to use public transport where possible to get around, and I know the more local train services don't have power sockets.

Speedwise it could be an overreaction to spending the last 5 months using a really slow PC to run multiple 15-30 meg excel files at once, and spending ages waiting for the files to open, often while on the phone to people needing to get data from the files etc. At one point I timed the computer's close down routine and it came to 12 minutes, and I also roughly calculated that on a bad day I was wasting upto an hour a day just waiting for the PC to turn on / close down / open / save/ close / swith between files.

Not that either latop option would be that slow, but I reckon hard disk speed etc would actually be more of a factor with a laptop that's got lower battery life, as I'd actually need to switch it on and off more between meetings / locations rather than potentially being able to just let it sleep with the files open.

I agree in many instances. However, for small business getting by on a shoestring, it may well be worth the (very minimal) risk. Business take all kinds of risks in order to survive, by which standards, the risk of using unlicensed software is actually rather small.

The question is, is it your call to make?

Your firewall does this?

Firewalls operate at the network level. Changes to apps would occur on disk.

Unless this is a software firewall on the PC that has some other software components that check your disk (which isn't a function of a firewall).

:hmm:

Yeah same, i decided to let it slide though.

Both my Macbook Pro and iMac are getting them very soon.
I hate you.

I've been interested in, but never been able to afford/warrant the expense.

I was looking into using a CF card based Hard Drive a while back

get a couplke of 32gb CF cards

and the 2x CF card adapter from these guys and away one goes

looked good to me and cheaper than buying a 60gb SSD off the shelf, depending on the brand of the CF cards, plus you could move the CF cards around different machines if you so wished....could be useful if you set one up to store OS and apps and the other for data
Much much much slower. The only advantage would be that it'd be silent.

lol... can I put an SSD in my Time Machine too? ;) Apple TV? ;)

Am I right the new iMacs have 2 x Sata inside? I'd like to add the SSD as the OS and use the current 1GB as just movies and stuff.
1GB

This is ok, now i feel all superior again despite my 20th century style HD.

Jessica is actually posting from a Microsoft address, so is there some sort of major shift in policy going on here?

I hope so, because I've written six times to Microsoft about a sound/hibernation problem and not heard a peep. Perhaps Jessica will help.

It's also worth mentioning that if you're too lazy to work out where the site you're posting on is based, leading you to post in the wrong units of currency and remind us of microsoft's fucking awful, arrogant, lazy and all round infuriating conversion rate (it's £30 here) yet a-fucking-gain, you should be beaten with the ban stick.

Welcome to U75, have a hobnob and don't lend dub a fiver.
