Sold someone a broken car

If they had a convenient mate who is a mechanic, why on earth did they not bring him along when they were going to buy the car?

This sounds like a scam to me, and I would not give them any money at all.

Giles..

legally - you have no obligation

Morally - ? thats another matter. I personally hate selling cars & wont sell them to people I know. A head gasket isnt fatal and does happen - they can get it fixed.

racial stereoytiping here - for years, the Poles have scoured Europe for broken or cheap cars, catrted them back to be jazzed up and resold - I cant believe that some Poles in the UK would appraoch the purchase of a car without knowing full well what it implies and how to fix it.

its not your problem - unless they are getting a bit threatenym, hen politiely tell them to feck off, however bad you feel about it

I spoke to the mechanic I use and he said that there is often condensation under the oil cap of VW engines and that he once, in his apprenticeship, wrongly replaced a head gasket on the basis of it.

I phoned the fellow back and he said he had had a different mechanic look at it who had said there was no problem... He finished the conversation saying that if something goes wrong in the next week then he will bring it back. Having felt like I had done my moral duty I happily told him with a laugh that it "doesn't work like that, but good luck mate" :)

Sold my car yesterday finally after trying for a few months and having various little niggly things go wrong.

They were a couple of young Polish blokes from Trowbridge and looked it over, had a drive and were all very happy. Then he phones this morning to say his mechanic friends have looked over it and the head gasket has gone. He wants me either to fix it or refund the money :(

I honestly didn't know about the fault and had it checked over by a mechanic recently. I had put the car on at a good £500 below the guide price at £1995. It's a W reg Skoda Octavia GLX 2.0 petrol, 43k, good condition. I really don't want the car back. I just want shot of the damn thing, but it doesn't seem to want to leave me. I've already signed the papers and sent them off to the DVLA.

I told him that if he got a reasonable quote I would pay for the repair as an act of goodwill. I'm assuming that it will be about £300. Fucking cars are a nightmare.

Its always sold as seen mate. Did he buy the 3 year warranty form you . . no tell him to fuck off and if he's got a problem with that and he can call me on my mobile and see that it all gets sorted. . .

he wont be walking anywhere let alone fucking driving.
