Solaris

I missed seeing all of it due to other stuff going on but from the first 45mins I thought it looked like a serious proper film for grown ups the like of which tends not to get made anymore.

Just read the book. In some ways a masterpiece, I can't think of any other SF book I've ever come across which really handles humans encountering an alien life force so different as to be mutually incomprehensible. And moreover engendering all manner of philosophical, even semi-religious ideas amongst thinkers of its time, as well as jealousies, grievances, trends, whatever amongst it's scientific community.
I think both films lack a great deal when compared to the book, but I guess summaries of scientific treatises are bit hard to do on celluloid.

Clooney's just summed up my experience of the film.

He's just summed up my experience of my life.

haven't read the book or seen the original, but also thought it was pretty good - in a hypnotic way. The music gave the whole thing a (slow) rhythm - and the visuals of the star/planet thingy were great.

Mind if they took the soundtrack off it, i suspect it would have been very ordinary.

ive tried to watch the clooney version 3 times now and not once made it through without falling asleep.

thing is, clooney is a good actor (when combined with a good director..such as ethan/joel cohen)..but that film was shit.

just watch Event Horizon. same basic idea but a much more engaging film.

it's a reall sllloooooowww builder but i liked it a lot. it touches lightly on some cool ideas in an accessible way. erm, i thought. :)

mind you if you're after something even remotely pacy, look elsewhere.

I thought the remake was good. Very atmospheric and dreamy, something a little different, almost like a mood piece. I'd quite like to check out the original but have yet to get round to it

Watched the remake again the other night - I think it's gorgeous. Just let it wash over me. Proper meditative stuff.

Would love to get hold of the soundtrack but it seems to be deleted, with second hand copies on amazon going for £50

If you're after the original Solaris on DVD, try to get the Region 1 Criterion Version, as the R2 Artificial Eye version is dire....
(The R2 version is on 2 discs, but for some reason, instead of having the film on 1 disc & the extras on the other, half the film is on 1 disc (along with half the extras) & the other half of the film (& extras) is on disc 2...)

...I'm watching it on Sky Plus: does it get any better? I'm halfway through....dead wife, space time continuum, suicide...yada yada yada...yawn.

Is she Antonio Reyes?

:(

Don't know, I actually fell asleep around half way through because it was so bloody boring...

It's a boring fucking film. So much so I actually fell asleep half way through and never bothered to watch the rest (I've not done that in a film since I was a kid!)...

Hahah! I fucking forgot I posted on this thread!:D
