Sofas! What's yours like?

aqua's sofa+blue blanky combo is the stuff of legends

Shut it, you :p

My sofa is almost the same as aqua's but with patterned cushions. My nana bought us the 3 seater sofa and 2 armchairs for just over a grand. They were from a local firm and are solid wood frame, and goose feather cushions and guaranteed for 10 yrs or summat. I fully expect it to last us a thousand years even though the boys have already broken one of the legs off it :D

We ordered some new furniture recently, and we also booked a holiday. Now the purpose of this isnt to show off, its to ask; why do these Bastards need your money so many weeks before delivery? Where else do you pay for something so long in advance of taking delivery?

Our sofas are ok, we got them from MFI 4 years or so ago. Theyre getting a bit tired but should be good for another few years.

I see that strung out replied to this further up. Just to add, I worked for a furniture company for a couple of years. One of the main parts of my job was to chase 'special orders' i.e. furniture not carried as an in-stock line, ordered especially like. The sales people used to quote 6-8 weeks delivery in order to secure the sale, but there was never any way in a million years that certain manufacturers would deliver in less than 12-15 weeks.

I bloody hated that job. The sales people got the commission and we (no commission) had to try and push the manufacturers whilst taking the kicking from the customers who had to wait double the time they were quoted.

Back in that day, though, the company I worked for would just take a 20% deposit with the balance due just prior to delivery. Was pretty rare for customers to pay the entire amount up front. Maybe times have changed.

My sofa is terracotta red, the size of a single bed, and very squishy and comfortable. I lovers it and falls asleep all night on it a lot.

- isn't buying new furniture a bit unethical these days too?

That must be why I felt that twinge of sinful guilt when I bought our new sectional!

We only had to pay a deposit for ours, we paid the balance the week before delivery I think.

I falls asleep a lot on mine too.

Ah, it still works like that then.

Sometimes customers used to get so pissed off with waiting 4/5 months that they used to cancel the order. We had to return the deposit though cos the sales person had quoted them delivery in an unfeasible time. Top tip - always make sure that the sales person writes down the lead time quoted on the invoice, folks :D

Sofas that you can fall asleep on as if they're a bed are both good and bad. But mostly good if you want a chilled out Friday night crime fest then waking up to watch Star Trek TNG at 2am :D

Very pretty and roomy sectional corner type unit there Johnny  Blinking Canadians with all that space compared to us Brits  :D

the place i work for you have to pay for sofas upfront unless you're paying with interest free credit over 6 months or a year. don't know if thats the industry standard as havent worked there long enough but they want all the money up front whether its from you or the credit company.

My ancient secondhand Habitat sofabad gently slides you towards floor within minutes but can't find a decent sofa or pref sofabed to fit in small space that can be delivered and does not cost fortune. I am typing this on beanbag with collapsed neck:mad:

Grrr. I was just thinking the other day that I should ask you about a sofa but totally forgot:rolleyes: ;)
I miss my huge grey leather sofa which looked like it was from the set of a seventies porn film. Got taken to the tip as could not find a home quickly for it when I moved to a dolls house:(

And it's not even in a corner: I don't like sticking all the furniture along the walls.

I'm kind of pissed off with the couch, actually. It has a tendency to throw you off a bit if you aren't situated properly.

that's just too much, I'm jealous, mine is a stupid grubby futon type thing, I was going to buy a leather one over Christmas, but I couldn't find one I really loved, so I'm keeping my eyesore and researching until I find one I really love.

Sofa/bed, must have cost well over £1000 new. I got in for nothing because the previous owner thought he was going to have to break it up to get it out of his house. (He had redesigned the interior of his house neglecting to factor in you do need to be able to get the furniture out.)
I did have to remove a couple of doors, take the bed action out and remove the feet, to get the bastard out, but I was not too worried about that.

Mine is like this - c1950s - same colour and buttoning - but with a high back and low arms - the sort of thing you'd find in a gentleman's club or an old university college (except it has pleat-front around the cushion edges)

It used to have those silly little castors on, but it was too low for me, so I replaced with large jacobean-style oak buns.
I like this one too, looks very deep and comfy:cool:

Acksherly, I think I slept on the other one. People with two sofas - pah

'Corner' was a UK centric technical term Johnny. We have oast houses in the depths of Kent that don't have corners and yet can house a similar corner unit. It's a mad world here in the UK.

The couch will conform imo, needs a bit of jumping and lying on to get the proper 'sagging to person' kitemark of quality*

sofas that take 6 weeks to order are generally made to order rather than picked from a warehouse. this means that most companys wont take orders without payment first as it represents too big a risk in case the customer changes their mind/can't pay etc. where i work we dont order anything without taking payment first as it would mean a lot of people would take the piss ordering things they can't/won't pay for.
I was gonna say that - probably in a less eloquent, more piss-take kind of way.

Ours is brown, from Ikea. They didn't have the right combination of sofa and sofa cover for weeks but we got there in the end.

It's quite nice.

The sofa and chair in our front room are second hand and wonderful 1970's, low, long, soft, patchwork leather - far too easy to fall asleep on, tend to do it pretty much every night. In the middle room we have a new (2 years old) brown leather sofa and chair, an art deco design - will last for ever as was very good quality (bought in the Barker & Stonehouse sale) but needs a couple of years to soften up, not slouchy enough yet :)

We've just taken delivery of a colossal red leather 3 seater, and a slighly smaller dark brown chaise longue, as the cats had completely demolished the old lovely red velvet squidgy sofa. They're sharpening their claws and circling me as a type.

Vanessa Phelps (of all people) does a really good rant on the power of sofa advertising.

It's an interesting item I think, not as private as a bed, not as public as a car.

Our sofa is a fucking disgrace. We inherited it with the house. I tried to dye the loose cover. Failed. Tried to make a new one. Got bored half way through. It looks like shit! We really should buy a new one....
