And what about the many more thousands of people who'll be heading for the many many more acts on offer, who'll be going nowhere near Blunt. In other words, positive people, openminded enough to be perfectly well aware that Glastonbury is more than about two or three of the more laughable headliners.
I was right down the front singing along to James Blunt in '04/05?
Not making any excuses for that. :)
It was an emotional time for me.

I've never been one to hate an artist to please my peer group though.
If I like something, that's all there is to it.

That's fair enough :)

My tastes are pretty varied, and can be quite weird too :p

I can't stand Mr Blunt personally, but I also think his presence at or absence from Glastonbury says nothing about this year's atmosphere/audience/lineup overall.

Negative snipers like kenny g who single out one or two disliked/'uncool' acts to have a pop at the whole event, while taking no real notice of all the rest that's on offer, are just being axegrinding tossers really.

Have a pleasant summer, Mr Positive.

I will thanks and it won't involve having to pay a large amount of money to be coralled with a bunch of Shakey and Blunt fans.
Whilst I am having a wonderful Midsummer with my family soaking up the delights of the Lake District or the parks of Manchester, I can't decide which quite yet, you will be hearing the echoes of at least ten thousand voices singing the delightful strains of "You're beautiful" alongside Mr Blunt. There will be no escape , no amount of visits to the Cider Bus will be able to rid you of the echoes that will continue to rattle through your mind. .

Where were you late June in the Summer of 2008 William?

Well, I was at a festival with thousands of people singing "you're beautiful" and "behind the green door" , it was great.

I wonder whether your openhearted and friendly bonhomie and joie du vivre might have something to do with your attitude here?

I do not understand what this is. Is it sarcasm? I had great Glastonburies but once Vince Power got involved I stopped going because he is a cunt.
Since that time you have devoted yourself to being a cheerleader for the "new glastonbury". That doesn't make me miserable it just makes me one of the many who have realised we have better ways of having fun then plugging ourselves into what has become yet another rip-off. But don't worry, hey...

You're Beautiful

So the headlining act has no effect on the type of people who attend? :eek:That has never been the case, I can remember the VERY different atmosphere when Oasis played due to the peeps who they attracted. The very fact that the festival didn't sell out on the first sale run this year would suggest that you were talking shit. But then I suppose that hasn't stopped you from letting your words getting the better of you in the past, and it won't again in the future either.

Sorry for not being a corporate fan boy like yourself. That hardly justifies the personal attacks, shirley?
Let's be honest, the main attraction for you isn't the music, or even the "green futures" (usually the muddy pasts) it is the opportunity to spend some time in close proximity with a fucking routemaster!

Hello Mr Kettle, Mr Pot here

... supplying local non corporate cider

Horses for courses innit :)

Real attraction : plenty of music, plenty of good friends, chance to hang out and chill and have FUN with positive people. Also, I'm working this year, putting something back in.

You're too much of a sniping misrable negative moan-boy to do that I reckon ....

Obviously there's no compulsion to like Glastonbury, plenty of people aren't going for good reasons that I respect. Not going because of one or two of the more dodgy headliners and because of them alone, isn't one of them. I suspect Mr Blunt's crowd will be fairly limited in size, I'm not aware of a single person who wasn't going before he was added to the lineup, and now is going just or even mainly because of him. He isn't 'the' headliner anyway, that's just a blatant distortion. He's just fairly near the top of the bill (too near, IMO) on a stage I and plenty of others rarely spend much time at anyway.

Perhaps I see Glastonbury as a whole, and perhaos I don't carry an axegrinding agenda, and perhaps I know enough about it not to single out one very duff aspect about which to sneer ....

Entitled to your 'opinion' of course, but you're coming across as an unpleasant twat.

the comment about younger people plus Jay Z was headling the sat night wtf... been every year it's been on since 2000 and every year had an absolutely wicked time even with the mud! but the whole group of us didn't even bother to register this year, gutted about missing massive attack though but will have to make do with EXIT fest this year :) anyone going to EXIT?

the comment about younger people

This one has been overblown and exaggerated to death. I'm 45, this is my 13th Glastonbury this year (albeit working) and that one throwaway comment abiout wanting a younger crowd by Michael Eavis was (while stupid and ill thought out) hardly an expression of intent to ban veterans from the festival, honestly.

In any case, that comment was in any case swiftly 'clarified' (ie, totally retracted). Weirdly  the retraction got far less publicity than the original comment ...

There'll be the same mix of vets and newbies, younger and older punters, as there always has been.

I really really hope there were reasons other than Jay-Z headlining, and other than some imagined feeling of being unwelcome because of your veteran history, that put you off.

My likelinood of going to see Jay-Z is pretty minimal (I'll be off to see Massive Attack instead, following Buddy Guy! ... hmmm, Glasto just for da youff eh? )

Does it really matter about one of the headliners on the main stage? You don't like him, fairy muff. But FFS! There's a squillion other things going on, right up and down the bill!

I see your point William, but doesn't it all generally seem pretty tired?

I mean what is there to get excited about on this years schedule?

And I mean all across the bill. Add to that all the other factors and it, tragically methinks, seems to have slipped quite horribly.

the comment about younger people

the number of oversensitive geriatrics who were outraged by this comment is astounding. they should all stop being so sensitive and fuck off back to their nursing homes tbh

You have a point. I am not sure I would have liked it when I was younger if it had been full of old farts. A few old farts was fine but if they had become the majority it would have been shit. I expect if i went now I would probably be classed as young which is a bit sad.

I just thought it was another one of Michael's bonkers off the cuff remarks. Was anybody really offended by a 72 year old telling them that they aren't "spunky" enough anymore? I understand there are prescription drugs available to overcome that sort of thing.

Im not an outraged oversensitive geriatric lol. I love Glasto, get excited as soon as i get near the site, it's always been about the magic of the place and the people not the lineup for me and me mates. We are usually there from first thing weds to monday but this year it simply didn't have the same appeal partly to do with Eavis said and jay Z being on (although yes i agree there are plenty of other stages to go to, plus even when u aim to get to see someone u never get there anyway... :) ) and also that I and the rest of the people that I usually go with fancied doing something different this year ie EXIT or whatever. There are so many other festivals about this year and some are lots cheaper. When they first talked about building the perimeter fence at Glasto i was fine about it just so they were able to keep putting it on as I would have been so gutted had they not been granted another licence... the first year i went I remember paying a tenner for to get over the fence... the crowds that year though... it was like the matrix... lol. We've been so lucky getting tix in the past, as soon as anyone was on the booking page they kept going with all our debit card details until we all had tix... year off this year though. off to the summersoundsystem in 2 weeks bit too commercial maybe but looking forward to the chems on the sunday as they were wicked at Glasto last yr and in 2005 and at Brixton academy in dec, maybe Winterwell, also going to garden fest in croatia, EXIT, then Glade again, possibly Big Chill again then Bestival for the first time, great summer ahead :)

I didn't bother this year for various reasons, the main one being the lacklustre line-up. The dance/electronic offering in particular – when I looked through the line-up it looked almost identical to last year. I mean, I like Squarepusher, but it feels as if he's headlining the Glade every year. Fatboy Slim, XPress 2 etc etc – it just felt like Glastonbury was resting on its laurels and wasn't making much of an effort to book some really interesting acts.

Having said that, it's always possible to find something you like...

Glastonbury's one of the few places where the line-up matters less because of the atmosphere, but last year left me doubting the festival's friendly vibe – hopefully it was just the weather getting people down, but I really missed those random conversations/chance meetings with people I'd had in the past.

I'm not ruling out going in the future, but just couldn't summon up the enthusiasm this time.

1 - couldn't be bothered with the registration process
2 - the mrs isn't really into festivals, and i'd find it hard to justify spending that much money (essentially enough for a decent holiday) on a single weekend away from her.

don't give a fuck about the weather - the first year i went was knee-deep mud, and it was still one of the greatest weekends of my life.

the line up is really, really shit this year though, isn't it? you expect it to be poor on the main stage, but it's shit across the whole site this time - only about 5 'must see' acts, most of whom i've seen before...
