was my immediate reaction too :D

I'd like to sneak Can in actually, I believe I can (hur, see what I did there?) thanks to reunions and a late release

Sojourner, it's so subjective anyway....I'm going to withdraw myself from this thread.

If I was in charge we'd all say The Pharcyde and be done with it!!!

I agree that they were influential, but surely not more than Run DMC??

Perhaps not to hip hop in general, but to the mainstream and perceptions of it, sure. I think that their image and style has probably been more widely used as a errr... template for other groups.

You could argue that they're not solely responsible for Gangsta Rap, but they're certainly a huge part of its presence and cultural perpetuation...

As Rap/Hip Hop is the biggest seller genre surely that means Sugar Hill Gang is in with a shout. They're still going as far as I know too.

It's absolutely subjective, I reckon, so very unlikely that there'll be a consensus.

Not J. Dilla? :p :D

Can't argue with that really.

the smiths.

The Smiths.

Why?
Music is a personal choice first and foremost. For me the Smiths are the most interesting, original and amusing band I've heard and become endeared to. The Smiths have influenced tons of bands since their break up. Four varied albums both emotionally and musically. So preference, influence and perseverance.

Seriously though, since 1982? Joy Division/New Order.
Well New Order yes, but given that Ian Curtis killed himself in 1980 Joy Division aren't elligible, surely?
Otherwise it was them.

Yeh, course it's subjective, oh don't withdraw :p

It can't be anything BUT subjective, cos there's so many bands who have influenced so many other bands, and fans

Hiphop and electronic dance music are the two most important trends in pop. The most critically revered auteurs in those are areas are probably Underground Resistance (or Derrick May?) and Public Enemy.

More than words:cool:

Given that Hip-Hop is the biggest selling musical genre in the world know I'd say someone like Public Enemy or NWA.

There have been hundreds of bands/musicians more influential than the Libertines.
