so who was the most important band of the last 25 years then?

Seriously, though - the 80s??
The 80s was brilliant and hugely important - so much innovation that has had a huge resonating influence on what is happening now - but the same could be said of any decade

By only allowing for the last 25 years, you are ruling out all the bands who influenced my youth. Like. Innit.

*shudder*

Hip hop, growth of post-punk (used as a time period, not a genre) alt guitar musics, House...

The Fall, Husker Du or The Replacements who apart from making loads of great records did a lot more drugs and had many more rock'n'roll escapades than the fucking jingly jangly C86 no hopers Libertines.

Nah apart from Husker Du the fallout of the other two didn't really have a global influence did it?

Wot no New Order?
Sonic Youth, maybe?
And does last 25 years exclude bands that started before 1982? Cos if not then Einsturzende Neubauten were pretty important, and of course The Birthday Party, The Bad Seeds...
Oh lordy, what a question.
I mean, even Depeche Mode were remarkably important! :D

Argh shit, even the Pet Shop Boys and Buggles were quite important!
E2A um, but Buggles fall outside of the 25 year bracket. D'oh.

Do you live in Notting Hill?

:p :D

Nope. Why, is it considered poncey to think that BVSC was a stunning album, regardless of the hype?

(Of course, most influential band of the last 25 years was tongue in cheek. Although not a fan, I'd have to go with Nirvana and the impact that they made)

"where the cocaine is free trade
and frequently displayed
is the Buena Vista Social Club CD"

No mention of Primal Scream? Well, I guess they weren't that infleuntial but Screamadelica is a beast of an album.

Dunno, but...

She stayed with me until,
She moved to Notting Hill,
She said it was the place she needs to be,
Where the cocaine is fair-trade,
and frequently displayed,
is the Buena Vista Social Club CD

Kraftwerk had a huge influence

I was going to say Squarepusher and Aphex Twin for making 'IDM' (hate that term) main stream.

The Housemartins. You can hear 'Me and the farmer's' influence on almost everything in the charts today.

Me & the farmer
Like brother like sister
Getting on
Like hand and blister
Me
A-a-a-nd the farmer.

Oh, and Norman Cook was in them and he's

:)

Fuck it. I am going to say with 100% conviction that in my opinion Radiohead are the most important band of the last quarter of a century. Rather than following OK Computer up with another OK Computer sounding album, they fucked off for a few years and pulled out Kid A which is a little short of genius. Life in a Glasshouse being one of their most overlooked tracks. The sax by Humphrey Lyttleton with Thom whaling over the background gives me goosebumps. When I hear that on my walkmen I press my headphones into my ears.

For me its not just music... its all got links and things. OK Computer = 1984, Amnesiac = Dante's Inferno, blah blah.

I will spare you all from my fanboi obession about them and leave you with some of their lyrics :D

i jumped in the river and what did I see?
black-eyed angels swimming with me
a moon full of stars and astral cars
all the figures i used to see
all my lovers were there with me
all my past and futures
and we all went to heaven in a little row boat

there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

i jumped in the river
black-eyed angels swimming with me
a moon full of stars and astral cars
all the figures i used to see
all my lovers were there with me
all my past and futures
and we all went to heaven in a little row boat

there was nothing to fear and nothing to doubt

Spot the Charles Mingus influence...

Since 82, the most influential band has been U2, no contest. From Radiohead to Coldplay to any number of bands you probably hate...they all owe it to U2.

The sad thing with Nirvana is that their legacy has been almost entirely negative. Who do we have nowadays thanks to Nirvana? Nickelback. No wonder Kurt offed himself, etc.

I think you've got to have NWA in there as well.

U2 and NWA are my votes.

This man speaks the truth. Unfortunately.
