so what were they saying about Mido then?

"Mido - he's got a bomb, you know", according to the reports I read. Nothing particularly witty about it, but that goes for the majority of football chants. Not particularly offensive either, I've heard worse.

File under 'storm in a teacup'.

richard reid isn't actually an arab though is he. IIRC he's a white-english/black-jamaican mix.

while the chant itself may be offensive in the same way that many football chants are, i don't think it is, in itself, racist. although there may be some that intended it to be, IYSWIM.

Nothing to do with heritage is it. The two things they have in common are (a) an apparent facial resemblance and (b) their religion.

While I'm inclined to agree with you from a logical pov, these fans aren't being logical. The intent is to be abusive.

Lets stamp abusive fans out of football. Good idea. none of this trying to annoy opposition players. if we could all sit in silence and politely applaud at the end of each half that would be even better.

mido when he had long hair did bare a passing resemblence to the infamous shoe bomber. kinda.

All muslims including mido(although i dont actully know his faith) are shoebombers= racist. mido looks like a shoe bomber = banter.

surely?

But seriously -Even when I go back to newcastle these days ( rarely ) I must admit that you do hear words like "darkie" still used by some in everyday conversation - it doesnt have the bile of the "n" word, but its still odd to hear in a British city in 2007.

Ignorance isnt an excuse, but its a factor

Yeah this is true.I used to work in and amongst older people and pensioners and I was quite amazed how many times I heard that word. You could never reason with them either if you pulled them about it..I hope things have changed now.

I wouldn't know, I've never been to a "rugger" game.

I have however been to probably more than a thousand games of professional football (and a few rugby league games as well) and I think some chants go beyond acceptability.

No. Mido is a muslim (if indeed he is...I don't know either :o ) and therefore a bomber. Not banter. Racist.

I doubt any of them know what Richard Reid looks like.

banter can be apalling

When NUFC went to West ham last seaosn, Glen Roeder the NUFC manager was abused as "cancer boy" by the WH fans due to his brain tunmor a while ago.

Nice.

Leeds + Sutcliffe

Manu + Munich

Liverpool + ....lots of things

its not pleasant, but its what happens when you get tens of thousands of proles , all leathered on lager & full of testosterone.

and at the end of the match , both sets of fans invariably walk out together and the abuse is usually forgotten.

fair enough. so why didnt ghally get those chants while he was at spurs in the same team as mido? hes muslim isn't he?

okay the newcastle fans might not remember what he looks like but im guessing the saints fans did, and the west ham fans certaily did.

I dont think were going to come to any agreement on this.

It may be distasteful but the teacup scenario is quite apt.

the circus of NUFC continues to provide easy copy for lazy hacks.

The more I think about it, the less this argument works for me.

It is only Mido who gets this, none of the other many, many Muslims playing in the Prem do. And he did have a resemblence to Richard Reid.

The aspect that remains is that there might be racist intent among some of the not terribly aware chanters and, despite the fact it makes no sense, that intent may still make it 'racist' i.e. can something entirely illogical still be 'racist'?

erm? Momo Sissoko is Muslim, so is Anelka....

I haven't heard chants about them being shoebombers...

agreed.

it's the intention of the individual fans rather than the chant itself that is racist.

Mido played a bit against us last night in the worthless cup. Missed a header from 6 yards hitting the cross bar. he he. Another world class prem player.

Of course it's racist. The fact that Mido looks more like the stereotyped perception of a Middle Eastern bod (well, he's Egyptian after all) and attracts more crappy chants than other muslims doesn't excuse it on grounds of being 'personal' or somehow less racist.

It's banter. But it's shit banter that should be frowned on.

I get embarrassed by that kind of stuff. I've never heard it but apparently they chant at Luton fans "Your just a town full of bombers, town full of bombers".

I remember playing for a side in a local semi pro cup game years ago, we had a few black guys in our team and one put in a tackle on a lad.
There was about 100+ watching at the game and someone shouted from the crowd "fucking n**ger".
I remember being to stunned to speak or move. I looked at the one of my team mates and he started walking towards the general area it came from in the stand. Holy shit. The bloke who shouted hid but was pointed out and lynched soon after :)

To be honest I'm amazed that anyone can claim that this kind of shit is acceptable. I realise that muslims and terrorist bomber types are the tabloids' favoured targets to demonise at the moment, but the banter excuse is weak. Mido's suffering from the same 'lump 'em together and dehumanise 'em' approach suffered by other minorities in the past.

All we need is someone to pop up and say' it's alright, he's our kind of muslim - he don't even look like the shoebomber'

To be honest its a very small minority that do this. Believe me i've seen and played in hundreds of games all over the country and it doesn't happen that much its just publicized by the media as they love negative news.
