So, what is it with Aston Martins?

The V12 was a bit bloated, but the 3.8 was just plain lovely. Look ^

 You have no taste!! :p

I think I just prefer older cars to the modern blobs that seem to all look the same nowadays.
Something doesn't need to be unreliable to have character. I loved my Manta(it was very reliable except for the leftbrake caliper  ) and I loved my Mk 2 Golf.

My current Golf just isn't the same, still reliable but something is missing :( and the even newer ones are just ick.

My friend's american husband had one when they lived in LA. My friend comes from a very poor English background and always aspired to be posh English. I think the Aston Martin was part of the image.

My friend drove a black VW beetle convertable which I quite liked but not as much as the AM.

I was easily impressed in those days though :)

But the difference is that if you drive a porsche or a ferrari people think you are a rich tosser and don't let you out of junctions.

In an Aston you are cool, and people let you out. :)

That's assuming the thing starts!

I have had a 911 and I did not get any flack. A lot depends on how you behave/carry yourself. It is the Tosser in the car not the car that is the problem.

If I were to for for a Porsche now it would be an old one as I said a 70's 911 Carrera.

I also years ago had a 356 - that was way cool but a bottom less pit of restoring.

I also have had TVR and Lotus - both a pile of crap.

Now I get the bus! Although I am hunting for a car.

thats why theres loads of astons around now there owned by ford

They only have the funding from ford etc, but they're still hand built cars and only a limit amount can be made a year as a result. Aston Martin are quite good cars now and it's the simple fact that because ford has invested so much money into them. Before ford came along they nearly went bankrupt quite a few times and the cars were really up to scratch for the money you were paying for them. Like take the db7 for example, beautiful car to look at, but it was based on old jaguar under pins and was a badly put together car that had many teething problems. Also, even though ferrari, aston martin, porsche and lambo are in simlar price brackets, you gotta remember that the aston martin is a different type of car to all of them. It's a GT, not an outright super performance car, you get a lot more luxury than in the other cars, and plus it's a different type of power to the other cars. They're 6 litre v12's in a GT design. Porsches are straight 6's, ferrari f355, 360's. f430's are highly strung, revvy v8's. Depends what you're posin is really.

A few years of reading UK car mags has taught me that "character" means:

(1) it's badly built
(2) it's unreliable
(3) it's horrible to work on
:)

That is most supercars,Ducati, and Hardly Dangerous motorcycles taken care of then. :D
(I would still like an old Desmo Ducati though)

A good few years ago I was offered a DBS V8, but I'd just bought a Lancia HPE so couldn't afford to trade. But driving the AM is among one of the most memorable drives of my life. It was just so good at everything it had to do. So very beautiful too. Only the Bentley T that I had later compared for sheer absolute beauty.

I have been through tmIll with cars - best one ? 1987 911 Carrera....yes, it did have City boy image , but if you take away the image problem, then I have not sriven anything as exciting & involving as a 911. A Blast to berlin topping out at 160 before I bottled is something to be remembered.

I have had more powerful & daresay faster cars, but nothing comes close to the 911 - form its Messerschmit like fascia & clocks , to the beautiful flat 6 engine.

engineered to last a million Km before needing any major work . Fabulous car.

i am not a fan of maserati tbh

what i do like about the slr though is that its comfortable, even luxurious you could say yet has eco warriors crying in despair at its fuel consumption and performance if you really go for it.

mind you i did have the luck to drive one for a few days so am possibly a bit biassed

This is what I want more than anything, a 964 and especially in lovely Maritime Blue.

Like being dragged down the road on a shovel.

Will do me nicely.

i love the older shape turbos. Drove an 88 or 89 3.6 Turbo once , when i worked for a car dealer. I can only describe it as fierce as fuck. Plenty turbo lag and then an almost vertical torque curve when that dustbin sized fucker kicks in. I had it for two days, pushed it hard and spun it maybe 8 or 9 times.

The late 80's 930 is the real beast - 3.3L 4 speeder - you dont need any more in their opinion - full Turbo flares & spoiler.

yes, it can resemble being" dragged down the road on a shovel" but it is the closest I have ever come to an insane covered Go kart experience ......... if that makes any sense - if you want fat lardy rides, then you can get a nice stretch limo with a TV.

As I said, I did have a 3.2 carrera - rare at the time, as it was without any flares or spoilers & rear was debadged at the factory by order.

and you could leave it out on the streets of SE LOndon in the snow for weeks on end . No rust & a first time start every time. Unlike MY present family Fiat.

When i was a kid, i was a huge fan of the European supercars. The big names at the time were the Lamborghini Countach, the Ferrari Boxer and then the Testarossa, the Porsche 930 (911 Turbo), and (more of a GT than a sports car) the Aston V8 Vantage.

But now i'm much more into older sports cars. Their lines are somehow just more pleasing to me; they seem to stand the test of time better.

If i had all the money in the world to spend on a car, i think my first choice would probably have to be the Mercedes 300SL coupe. The roadster is a pretty nice car too, but those gullwing doors just top off a beautiful design.

I'm also a huge fan of the car that came before the Countach, the Lamborghini Miura SV.

Of course, even if i had that sort of money, i don't think i could bring myself to spend that much on a car. If i did win the lottery or something, though, i might think about splashing out on something a little cheaper for those warm summer days, maybe a 1959 Mercedes 190SL or even a 1957 Chevrolet Corvette.

Too brash and naff compared to the AM V8 OI

e-types are all wrong around the arse, especially compared to the Fezza 250

and as for the Veyron :barf:

I like those old GT-500s, but they just look like a slightly tricked-out version of an everyday American muscle car. If i were paying that much money for a car, i'd want something that was a little easier to differentiate from a bog-standard Mustang.

I'd prefer a nice Austin Healey 100/6, if it's all the same.

fair enough!

I did once have a 1970 3.3L PC Cresta with bench seats & an 8track fitted......erm.....that was actually about 4 years ago.....strange thing was, I got more appreciative looks from Girls when I was in the cresta that the 911.maybe it a man thing to go for sleek/sharky looking cars ?

Actually, Ive now got the hots for a mark IV Zephyr/Zodiac........trouble is, everyone spends thousands keeping their 911 s/ 348s etc etc in tip top shape but the old lumpy workhorses like Cortinas & Zephyrs are left to rot on street corners.Shame.

I have promised myself a good Z' car in the spring when I have time to try & track a good one down..if that is possible

Never been there meself (old/new Fords ain't my thing ;) ), but always assumed they were one of the best places to go if you were after say an old Cortina or summat.

and my dad had a DBS (6-cyl version) for a bit, which was very

_007_Dbs2.jpg

they may not be the quickest or best made but they've always been top of my list

Merc? pah, naff as anything :p

I think the DBS (with wire wheels and four headlights) is one of the best looking cars ever and it seems very comfortable. I'd have one if I could afford the running costs (or a mid-70s Jaguar XJ6 2 door coupe).

I used to pass the Aston Martin factory on my way to college, and my favourite (which I only saw once or twice) was the four door Lagonda from 1974, which was based on a stretched V8. I think they only made about seven, and one ended up in a barn before it was restored :( If you're driving one of those you can be sure you won't see another one on the road coming the other way.
