So this Twitter thing?

All the people asking questions could easily find out by just going on there.

It is pretty simple. It wouldn't take more than five minutes.
I disagree. The attraction of some things can't necessarily be understood immediately - it takes time to get into, or someone else (a maven, if you like your Gladwell) to explain the benefits.

They should just go and try it though. It is not really very complicated to get your head around.

That is what I did.

I did - I registered yesterday:

It just looks like a cut-down micro-version of a blog.

Sorry, looking at the website for five minutes doesn't answer my questions.

Perfect, thank you.
You're welcome. :)

Potential 'useful' uses of Twitter include:

  • Connecting with other people in your geographical area
  • Connecting with other people in your industry/career
  • Keeping up to date with things that interest you by "following" publications, news feeds, or well-known people in your chosen area
  • Participating in casual conversation with friends and/or family
  • Arranging and updating social arrangements (including last-minute changes, as Twitter can be accessed on your mobile as well)

...And many more.

WTF does "overthinking" mean?

It only took me a few seconds to "think about" and write that post. If I did any less "thinking" I'd end up posting "meeergh blergh blergh meep meep meep" or somesuch random noises.

Sorry if you don't do 'techie' - feel free to leave it to people who enjoy that kind of stuff.

Your thoughst are composed of sextets of funny noises?

It's abit facebook, and it can send you text messages too, from what I have gathered in my investigations thus far.

You can get standalone programs for it. I think the most popular one is called 'tweetdeck'. But it is a website first of all.

I think the biggest appeal is that you can access it easily from your phone - a lot of people post from their iphones.

I think most of the questions have been answered somewhere or other on this thread!

Forgive me for not giving a serious answer. I am not really a techie.

I went on there because it was just another way to keep in touch with a few friends. I don't go on facebook, and some of them are not really on urban much anymore.

I am also subscribed to some news thingies, so I get news updates on there.

Some people are interested in following the famous twitter users, like Stephen Fry, for example.

:)

I don't think Twitter is for these losers to be honest.
I post on forums, read blogs, use facebook and sometimes IRC chat channels...

...what I am failing to see atm is why I should also bother with twitter: what does it give me that these other channels don't already provide?

I suppose the answer is the access to the wanky wannabe-trendy celebs and other wankerish types who seem to be creaming themselves over this but are too-cool-for-facebook-or-forums: presumably because twitter is set up in a very "look-at-me" way? Maximum attention for minimum content = celeb-heaven?

Yeah but what did you have for tea?

They would be if they got any less basic than my initial post on this thread - hence my disputing that I am "overthinking".

Lighten up mate. You're taking this all very seriously.

I can't answer the techie questions. I just use it to stalk and chat to Dillinger and some others. And my housemate.

And celebrities.

Maybe it's not your cup of tea.

Exactly, if it hadn't been for Twitter I never would have discovered that Buddy Bradley was seeing my wife on the side (sort of) :D

For me the answer is that it is an ambient kind of connectedness, that you don't get with forums, blogs, or Facebook. With those it takes an effort on your part to go and read and/or update them; with Twitter, the updates come to you, and it is up to you whether to ignore them or respond in some way.

The difference between Twitter and IRC is that, in a chatroom there is an expectancy that you are paying attention and will respond.
