So I got an English Democrats Leaflet through my door....

God I've read some very misinformed opinions above. As far as I am aware they have stood Asian candidates in London, and also have Jewish members, members who have Scottish family and Black members so I'm not sure where your "far right" stuff has come from? As for the Anti-Scottish stance.. well Angus McNeil the SNP member of parliament who took Labour to task over cash for honours gave a speech at one of their conferences, along with a chap from the Liberal Party, a UKIP candidate and Lecturer on Politics from Brum Uni.
That hardly sounds like a Nazi gathering to me regardless of your opinions on dodgy elements within UKIP.

Fuck off. You googled EDP and came across this thread and signed up to urban, correct?

lewislewis - No problem re the mixup :).
I think the reason apart from the obvious publicity was to highlight an issue that the government just decided to fix a grey area that was the border in a manner that was very undemocratic. I wonder if the Tories hadn't done this, and in the future if Wales was an independent state, whether some people in Monmouthshire would have been rather upset if they where "trapped" in England?
As for the party being a joke, the party will only be what the people make of it at the end of the day. As it grows, which it obviously is it's going to attract more talent and people from a more diverse background (I believe Vernon Coleman joined recently). I for example used to vote for the Green Party before joining the EDP.
I wouldn't have joined them if I thought they where either a joke or a bunch of Skinheads in disguise (my wife is foreign for a starter so I doubt that would go down well with a hard right party!).
There is certainly a democratic deficit in England at the moment and I don't see "call me Dave", Brown or Clegg doing anything about it.

It's all a bit suspicious to me- even if Wales is independent in the future the border matters alot less than the consciousness of the people living in that area. There wasn't an issue at the time, Monmouthshire has always been part of the entity known as Wales, not because of lines drawn by politicians but because the majority of people living there believe they are Welsh. The area was known for hundreds of years as Sir Fynwy.
The EDP thing was not demanded by residents of the area but was concocted outside of Wales by the EDP.

The county of Monmouthshire has traditionally been Newport (which the EDP also claimed should be invited to have a referendum- lol), nobody in their right minds can suggest Newport is English or has ever been so. The county itself after Newport left in 1891 was part of Wales- except that you could claim that the entirety of Wales belongs to England by right of conquest.
Monmouthire has always belonged to the diocese of Llandaff (centred at Cardiff), so in the pre-modern days was also part of Wales.

It is for these reasons that I feel the EDP was trying to have a snipe and Wales and hoping right-wing people (not necessarily skinheads of hard-right!) would enjoy it.

I'm not that bothered though, it isn't an issue, I just find it bizarrely interesting and love the history.

As I said I have mixed feelings over whether it was a wise decision to go down the Monmouthshire referendum route. I would imagine the vast majority of people consider themselves Welsh (even if their great grandparents didn't for example) so the debate is slightly academic these days. Historically the borders have always been grey areas :) even Offa's dyke isn't the "official border" between the modern countries of England and Wales.
Still history certainly is fascinating stuff :)

i wrote about them here

they got quite upset :D

By the way, regarding this:

"All things said, to have been a Jew in Nazi Germany could not have been a pleasant experience: but, as the over 4.3 million claims against the post war German state from Jews who suffered as a result of this persecution, (by 1998 the German state had paid out over $50 billion in reparations), certainly far fewer died than what is most often claimed. Increasingly, all the evidence urges a complete revision of this aspect of the history of World War Two."

It is worth pointing out that only a small proportion of the jews who were killed came from Germany. Many many were from Poland or other neighbouring countries. I'm not sure if it's because a lot of the german jews saw what was brewing and got out while they still could (before WWII), but it could help explain why there were over over 4.3 million claims (besides the obvious).

Sorry for bumping a years old thread but it seems easer than starting a new one.

The english democrats are standing a candidate near me and I've been asked to knock up a leaflet for people to dish out. Being a lazy sod I'd rather steal the work of others, anyone know where I get some good material from. I've been searching but can't find a thing to use.

It's worth searching for stuff about Chris Beverly the ex-BNP bloke who now plays a big role in the ED's, also search for BNP into the ED's as there has been a significant migration from the one to the other.

There's an English Democrat mayor in Doncaster (Peter Davies) who's been an absolute disaster, a report into the torture of kids by two young boys in the town found that it could have been prevented - if he and the council he headed up weren't utterly incompetent ("Those leading the council - the mayor and cabinet, some councillors and some officers - do not collectively have the capacity or capability to make the necessary improvements in governance.") Here he is making a twat of himself on Radio Sheffield:

English Democrat's candidate in the Salford mayoral elections:

My personal priority is to listen to the people of Salford and bring changes by:-
1) Cutting council tax by 50% using my investment and innovation action plan.
2) Committing all council staff into providing a “customer knows best” culture.
3) Remove council staff and councillor concessions and terminate added privileges.
4) Protect statutory essential services, reducing none essentials to best save money.
5) Steam-line public services to do things cheaper, faster and to save more money.
6) Eradicate service duplication including ending the employee wasteful job shares.
7) Terminate all Council gifted deals and re-evaluate adverse sponsorship deals.
8) Offer quota skill based scrutiny committee places to include local ward activists.
9) Issue Salford Council’s apology to residents who suffered during its regeneration.
10) Guarantee practical assistance to Salford’s dedicated and proud community groups without whom many local services would suffer. Social Capital will prevail.

Just googled but there site seems to be down...looking on wikipedia are they just the same as The Scottish Nationalist Party?

No they bloody are not!! The SNP have NO objection to immigrants having rights or indeed voting in the potential referendum.

Why can't there be a left English nationalist party? Or if English nationalism doesn't have to exist (which is fair enough for obvious reasons), can't there be a progressive/left party campaigning for England and forming an alliance with Plaid and the SNP?
Why are national causes in England mainly taken up by right-wing nutters, whereas in Wales and Scotland it's the left that do it?

I would like to know the answer to that too, are they all unionists ?, are all unionists right wing ?, are they all God save the Queen types ?

haha its funny as fuck listening to this where he says he's gonna cut Gay Pride funding and PC jobs etc , then you see the picture of another of their candidates on this thread!!!!

Now why would a unionist party call itself the English Democrats and call for a separate English parliament?
