So how criminal is your hoods then?

Where I am in SE13 is on the cusp of three boundaries. If I leave the house and turn right I go into a high crime area, if I turn left I go into an above average area and if I walk across the road I am in an average crime area..

We live in an 'Average area' (in Wandsworth)

July 2008 1 0.71
(does that mean there was only 1 reported crime in the month of July?)

then cross the road and it's a high crime area (that's a bit of the common and where the posh houses are), then walk a bit further and it's a below average area with 0 crimes in July

only 1 in that rediculously small sub-ward (my one consists of 4 1/2 small streets :D)

but its only burgleries, robberies and vehicle crime, not stabbings and shootings:eek::(

Yes, I heard that. And also that high crime areas = places where people have insurance they can claim off. People without insurance don't bother reporting theft.

I think there is certainly some mileage in that. I was just about to post that one of the dodgiest and poorest areas I know of here is 'below average' despite the fact that anacedotely it is high crime (and certainly while I lived there for the first 20 odd years of my life).

But the police can only really be held to account for recorded crime so it's fair enough really and I don't see the harm in these maps. It's nice to see that reporting crime makes some difference, even if it is only in changing the colour of the map and I think the actual numbers may be lower that what people might have expected at a local level.

7 crimes in 1 month and thats above avergage . Criminals must be a really lazy bunch if they commit on avergae less than 7 crimes a month

It would be better if they broke the figures down by crime IMO . So you could look at burglary , robberies and car crime seperatly .

Your Ward: New Cross
Your Borough: Lewisham

The crime rate for your area is Average

Burglary, robbery and vehicle crime Month Crimes Rate
July 2008 4 2.68
June 2008 4 2.68
Weird - my New Cross subward is 'below average' and even has a zero:

Burglary, robbery and vehicle crime Month Crimes Rate
July 2008 0 0.0
June 2008 4 2.91

'Course, when we get crimes, we get crimes man :D :(

For Newham in general, as opposed to my imediate postcode as posted earlier.

The crime rate for your area is Above average

Burglary, robbery and vehicle crime
Month.. Crimes... Rate
July..... 837... 3.43
June..... 761... 3.12

As far as I can see, most of the "zero crimes, zero crime rate numbers" quoted for some subwards are bogus numbers because of the absurd approach to data protection being taken [by the Met and/or Information Commissioner ]

Met Police said:
It should be noted that where the occurrence of a crime type is particularly low and there is a risk of identifying an individual, the MPS is not permitted to display actual numbers.

Even if only one person got burgaled they can't be identified from this data!
That could only be a problem if the public crime maps were actually showing individual incidents as data at address level.

Using my postcode (Walthamstow, ward High Street) i got:

Crime rate High
July 2008 12 7.66
June 2008 6 3.83

using the borough (Waltham Forest):

Crime rate Above average
July 2008 654 3.00
June 2008 673 3.08

Tough place the Stow  :D Bet a lot of it is car breakins though! At the top of the road the street lights are often out, i often walk past three or four cars in the morning that have had their windows smashed in. Would be interesting to see the stats broken down further.
