here ya go :)

Am, C, D, F
Am, C, E, E
Am, C, D, F
Am, E, Am, E

pick it, strum it in groups of 4 or 6 or whatever you fancy

I've been trying this...I rock:cool: well not quite but it sounds good anyway...:o

I need more like this as it's great practice changing between the chords even if it doesn't sound like the original song;) ....Anyone?

You got to get the intro right on that one, which involves sounding the strings a little more than a strum iyswim ... dum, deeedle eedle dee dum .... it's instantly recognisable then :D

Go for the acoustic classics to start off with and build up yer repertoire like

erm ...

Take It Easy (Eagles) is simple: verse G D C G D C G chorus Em C G Am C Em C G C G Am C G GG

Working Class Hero (John Lennon) Just a combination of Am G and D/A x00232

verse Am G Am G Am G Am chorus Am G Am G D/A Am

Killing Me Softly With His Song
(Roberta Flack but you can Fugee it up later :D ) easy peasy ...

chorus Em Am D G Em A D C G C F E (linky drum rythmn for 8 bars) verse Am D G C Am D Em Am D G B7 The 'ohhhhh, ohhhhhh middle bit is just Em Am D G and the lalalala is Em A and the woh la is D C G C F E

well there's three easy ones although mebbe not to your taste :o

I'd like to learn Lay Lady Lay.

You need:

A (fret 5 barred) C#m (fret 4 barred) G (fret 3 barred) Bm (fret 2 barred) E, F#m (barred) A and D

Have you done barrs yet though? Takes a bit of practice ... in a nutshell using (usually) first finger to hold down all the strings then the remaining fingers to shape the chord. Worth practising F, C and G with a barr on first fret till you can train yer first finger to stay flat plus holding down pressure on the strings.

Might be racing ahead here tho  :D

:D There's loads of people here that actually know what they're doing. I've never progressed beyond the basics so writing out the basics is probably easier for me than it is for a fully fledged guitar hero :D

One of the best things you can do is watch someone play fairly straight forward acoustic guitar - and one of the best ways to do that is in a folk club. Sure, you might not like the tunes/melody - but it's great for watching and learning.

I have absolutely no clue what you mean...sounding the strings how? if i'm not to strum...?:o

But then youre fucked when you need to move to the sus4.

Hmmm...

*picks up guitar and plays walking with jesus by spacemen 3*

Nope, seems I can hit that Asus4 just fine with my pinkie, and by all normal standards I'm a pretty crummy guitarist ;)

Can't explain it ... sort of strike the lowest string of the chord (i.e. the strings that you're holding down not the open ones) then follow on striking the rest slowly and individually, then on the next chord change do the same ... argh ... DUM deedle eedle dee dum .... NO doesn't work, would have to show you  :D

Believe or not that actually does make sense....I think, will have a go....

Anyway, I have been practising all evening and I think i'm doing well so far...
so far so good eh?;) :D

Blimey so many guitarists in here.

I too played last night, I tried that House of the Rising Sun and could hear it, but its too old for me to want to perfect. :D

Liked the idea about watching - where can I find a good folk club? I live in SW London - there's the Half Moon in Putney?? Or what about Ain't Nuttn but Blues in Soho - those sorts of places?

Cesare my barr chords are OK thankyou; F is OK, B is OK, when I play something by Richie Cotzen, he plays A up the finger board.

I just find this instrument so big! My violin - well first off the strings were in intervals of 5ths where the guitar is 4ths and not always that, so I can't 'hear' where the music goes, or how to play it how it needs to go, iyswim. And doing a slide of an octave - yeah right. Too far! Must practise more.

Very inspired to see so many people picking their guitars up because of this thread tho.

Thanks for the Bob Dylan as well - I bought a ticket to see him in April. :D

Hey Jo, is a good one for using lots of chord changes in position 1. As in no bar chords.

C. G. D. A. E.

And just round n round.

Even I found this easy and I have the hands of a lobster. It was one of the first songs I could play right through.

Learn the blues scale (you can play that on any fret) and sound like Chuck Berry.

Use the pinky! As in holding a D shape, then bringing said pinky down on the E string will give you a G (am I making sense so far? :D ).

Don't neglect your rythym, by obsessing about chord shapes. Use less strings and fewer fingers to get the chord you want.

Learn 3 inversions of the Major Chords and then work your way through the minor ones. :p

Get to know your fretboard and every note on it. :D

End of week one, rutita's log::cool:
Very sore fingers but am perservering.:(
Can't play a tune yet but am practicing chord changes and doing scales....
Did I say I had soreeeeeeeeeeeeeee fingers?
Am going to find a beginners class and badger my mates to give me some of their time.:)

Our eldest is having lessons and the first 10 or so have been all about plucking technique, getting your finger tips to find the strings, no chords yet.

I'm hoping this approach will turn him into a proper guitarist :)

Have been inspired by this thread to practise more. Here's 3 quite stretchy chords I found somewhere. Perhaps not for the beginner, but a good exercise. Not sure of the technical name of them. Suspended minor then couple of suspended majors maybe.

First finger, barred on 5th thret.
Second finger. A string. 7th thret.
Third, D string, 9th thret.

First finger barred on 5th.
Third, A string 8th thret.
Fourth D string 8th thret.
Second G string, 7th thret.

It's like a major chord but one thret up from the bar.

First finger, barred on third thret.
Third, A string 5th thret.
Fourth D string 7th thret
Second, G string 4th thret.

That last one's a bitch.

I've been playing 2 years and mine still hurt! wait til they go hard and you can't feel the tips! :(

You could try 'Knockin' On Heaven's Door'

Alternate verses between

G-D-Am7

and

G-D-C

all v easy chord shapes, easy to strum too.

Little tip, if you get into the habit of playing E with 3rd 4th and pinkie fingers it 's much easier to slip down to an F.
I find B is a bugger tho.

check out www.chordie.com
It's got hundreds of songs from real easy to real hard.
Old stuff like Woody Guthrie to new stuff like Lily Allen.

That's a great site as long as you stick to the public books etc - I got a bit nervous with what you had to do to get the free guitar tabs :D Mind, the public books have the tabs so it's
