I just bought one last week and started learning too.

My fingertips are starting to toughen up already, but they still dont have the strength to do barre chords :(

good luck with it.

Soak em in surgical spirit

just play and play and play is the best thing you can do. I think I played the chord of E for about one month solidly when i first started playing guitar. :D

What sort of guitar Rutita?
:o *shows lack of knowledge*
ermmmmmmm acoustic, bloody hard on the fingers :p
A friend gave me it for my birthday, they picked it up in a second hand shop and sorted it out for me....

Am finding my breasts are getting in the way too:o ....they'll have to go. ;)

Hello - I got a steel string earlier this year. Half an hour later I could play 'Wish you were here.'

My best advice - play D, G and A. That's chords I, IV and V in the key of D. Listen to how they all sound together.

Similarly G, C and D.

My advice is to make sure you position it properly, not so its flat and you're looking down at the hand shapes!!! You'll get marks on your chest that way.

Also when you are watching telly and there is a break, pick it up and do that chord change you were practising. If you can do it straight off, good on ya. :D

And don't bite the pads off!
And paint yr nails - they look cool when playing.
Anything by Richard Ashcroft is easy - try the drugs don't work.

...as well as all the above, I'd recommend getting a half decent guiatr tuner. It makes all the difference when starting out; unless you have perfect pitch.

good luck!

Make sure you perfect the legs spread wide apart action and low strap technique. Everything falls into place after that, and if it doesn't who cares.

lmao. The man is right.

A full length mirror is essential when starting out. As are a decent pair of shades and leathers. :D

As long as you look rock and roll and the volume it up you will be fine.

The mirror thing came in handy for me. I hadn't rocked for quite some time until the middle of last year, if I hadn't checked myself I could have ended up looking like slowdive.

I need to work some more on my movement.

Me too folks - another 30+ first time 6 stringer here.

I'm using Guitar for Dummies. I've got fuck-off big callouses and still my fingers hurt after an hour or so.

I'm six weeks in and so far I've got the following chord families, tho getting the changes is patchy with some of em

A, D, E

D, Em, G, A

G, Am, C, D, Dm

C, Dm, Em, F, G

I don't think I'll move onto 7th chords till I can really fly between these basic ones

And I'm boring Mrs S to death learning House of the Rsing Sun.

So far I've learnt the most frustrating thing is that you'll play a good version of the tune and then can't repeat those perfect chord changes and strums for a week

Are you wearing gloves?

nope, but out of consideration to my flatmates I'm using an electric (with comfy headphones plugged into the amp when it gets late).

not sure what the exact difference is, but there is one (less strength, but more cheese-grater like strings?)

Also, have been spending a lot of time practicing since I got it.

Fits in really nicely around a fitness routine, so it's great for me.

Soion - 6 weeks in and you can play F? Good on ya!

F and G are my banes.

As is switching from any cord to any other in less than 3 seconds.

Still.. thanks to guitar from dummies I could read tab on day 1 which means I could teach myself the intro from 'Come as you are'.

ahh well, it kept me entertained for a while anyway.

I got loads better v quickly with F when I practised changing to it with my eyes closed. It sort of helped me visualise the finger shape.

Don't worry if you have loads of trouble with F and still get a buzz on an acoustic after playing for a year.

There's more than one way to skin the F-cat ;)

F is fine.
It's the A I can't get without a rattlin and a hummin.

Looks well hard to use:eek:

Depends, you can use it to note down your own tunes, or other people's songs that you've figured out, which can take a bit of practice (although anyone who can read music properly will probably find it very simple). On the other hand, if you download other people's tabs from the t'internet you can just press play and it'll run through the tab in the correct timing, and play the melody for you, making it dead easy to learn certain riffs :)

(NB I'm talking about powertab, never used the other one...)
