SNES: As Good As It’s Going to Get?

It's true, the old consoles had excellent rpgs - but there have been good ones since. Zelda for the N64 (ocarina of time), ff IIIV and X were all good imo and Morrowind is not only an excellent game but a fantasy masterpiece (although it's not a console RPG in the strict sense I suppose). You've also got to remember that games like GTA, while not what you might clasically call RPGs, kinda are anyway. Besides, if you want good RPGs these days you can always use a PC - MMOs, heavily modable single player games etc etc...

you mean the geeky "asagoth has 3 attack, 7 skill, 4 cocks, and 1 badger - roll the die to see who wins!" fuck orf, they're all geeky cack ;)

i like cheesy love stories, epic battles, stunning cut scenes, and cute manga characters - that's a proper game! anyone who wasn't amazed by FF7 is a donkey.

Nah, pen and paper RPGS aren't really my thing, although I played AD&D and MERP a bit as a kid.

As for all that FF stuff, couldn't be arsed after the first "battle", just soooo tedious. And the "plots" are incredibly hackneyed and twee.

Proper RPGs these days are things like world of warcraft, but I decided that stuff was way too dangerous after I wasted several years on ultima online and everquest.

*yawn* :)

There's always much questioning about the "golden age of gaming", and people usually forget the bad games, and compare games like mario and sonic to your average "will be £17.99 in a couple of weeks" current gen action game, instead of picking up gems like power rangers or wrestlemania. Take the NES, for instance. While it had all those greats like SMB, Zelda, etc, around 90% of the catalog was wank - but ask anyone about the nes, everyone will say it was a great console with great games. The only console that will have their memory with all the failures burned deep down is the Atari VGS. of course, not everyone can brag about bringing the entire industry down, can they ?

I agree. It's always been the case. I remember when I had my amiga, and everyone said "Well the graphics and sound are great, but the Amiga games just don't match the old Spectrum games for playability.

Which was clearly hogwash. People remember the good and filter out the bad. It'sexactly the same with films, music, times, nostalgia generally is never as good as it used to be.

My favourite RPG games were the ones like Dungeon Master and Eye of the Beholder, where you were wandering around a dungeon getting attacked by things. Terrifying, at times they were.

Although "Doom" took the style a step further by making it properly scrolling 3D, IMHO Doom would never have existed in the first place without these games...

How do you know, if you didn't get past the first battle? :p

These days, if a FF game doesn't take at least 100 hours to finish and about 300 to do 'perfectly'. It's not 'long' :p
