"Snails that held up a bypass have died out"

story

Gone for a Burton
Remember the protest agianst the Newbury Bypass in 1996?
Remember that one of the many arguments against it was that a rare snail lived in the area?
Remember that the road builders said that they'd protect the snail?
Well the snail now appears to have "died out"

I beleive the popular concensus of opinion was that when the Moors and Jews of Medaeval times were persecuted and driven from their lands and natural habitats it was thought little of because they were only what they were.

Do you think people are any better or greater in their ability to evolve to their surroundings; and that one species has a right of desecration of another simply because they have the power do do so?

Shame(sic)...muppet! :p

And they're morally equivalent to snails, are they?

I think that they're snails. Not people. I happen to be a person, not a snail.

I really, really don't care what happens to snails.

So you don't understand why biodiversity is important?

Well every time we wipe out a species we're fucking with the ecosystem - good enough reason for concern.

Besides I like the blighters.

no morals involved...I gave you a c o m p a r i s o n to demonstrate the importance of this biological event in the greater scope of evolution and your chosen response.

Thickie!:D

I hope that this sort of response is born out of ignorance and being un-informed. I fear, however, that it is, in fact, engendered by the same sort of attitude that is at the root of the problem. The crisis facing the planet affects snails, and polar bears, and the Amazon, and sex-change trout etc. At what point do you decide to care??! It's ALREADY too late.

And in part why I respondeed so vehemently In Bloom.

I know people who have and do put their lives physically, mentally and totally at risk over things that people don't care about...and it's about time they and what they are attempting to protect deserve the respect they are entitled too.

You will prolly think doomslayer_laden but you are a witness to this End Game as any of us are and I believe strongly that the worms are turning and soon People will choose over People to protect natural resources.

Hell!.... noticed anything else in the News lately over the use of other bits of land .... oil and stuffffffffffffff?

*While I'm at it ...this sort of story also occured with the Eden Project..ie the loss of a population of local snails...but their PR machine was alot more adept at losin'_smotherin' the story...waaaaankas! And why won't go to the place or say anything pleasent about it.

And does this particular species of snail hold a unique place in the ecosystem that other snails can't fill?

You made a moral comparison when you started talking about who has the "right" to do what. So kindly don't call me the thickie, you foul little wanker.

Had it occurred to self-important little pricks like you that you and your causes are not particularly important?

The point is In Bloom, that no one knows what consequences there will be to the ecology if certain species die out. Human beings rely on the ecological balance. So even coming from a "humans are more important than anything else" pov, your stance is very silly.

made you look,
made you stare,
made you lose yer underwear!

:p

...the safest course is to do nothing against one's conscience. With this secret, we can enjoy life and have no fear from death.

Sucker! :D

So, do you actually have any politics, or are you just a bit of a cunt?

Your argument seems contradictory -- swap out snails for people:

And does this particular X [where X = insert an ethnic/religious group] hold a unique place in the ecosystem that other people can't fill?

....now who's the "foul mannered wanker"?

My politics are I Put My Life Where My Mouth_ilk is...today it's snails...sorry I've got a visitor now so can't carry on fer the mo.:)

People, snails. Think about it.

Badly thought out a lot of the time. Like in this thread for example. As I said on another thread, I broadly agree with your analysis. However your silly brand of posturing lets you down as it does with most anarchists on here. A great shame IMO.

I never said anything about manners, AR lunatics like you just make me feel slightly ill.

This is exactly what I mean. In your rush to distance yourself from animal rights and deep ecology, you throw the baby out with the bathwater.

Regardless of your feelings about snails an important issue here is the deception of the state regarding the impact of the bypass.

The whole point of relocating the snails and their habitat was to demonstrate that the environmental impact of the road could be mitigated sufficiently to appease liberal (i.e. non-radical) environmentalists. And so justify road-building ad infintum.

Just one of many examples of greenwash and big fat fibs from the government, construction industry, and road lobby.

Now the translocation of the snails has failed so dismally they won't be able to pull this con again. Although I'm sure there's plenty more gullible apologists out there willing to keel over to save a few precious seconds from their oh-I'm-so-important luxury car trips...

As for the importance of non-human species, try reading up on ecosystems, interdependency etc... We're all in this (or rather on it) together y' know...
