ring it fookin on!! Can't wait. Went for a pint in Dublin before Xmas, and was astonished to realise 25mins into it that I could still breath clearly and that my eyes weren't watering and that my clothes didn't stink.

So you're in favour of state bans?

But what if the state decided to ban something you like?

What of the anarchist opposition to the state?

Fuck that Nep, we're talking practice here, not theory!! :D

If a govt ban is what it takes to get a smoke-free pint, bring it fucking on!!! And they can have my DNA while they're at it - yeah, John Reid can lick my DNA off the tip of my glistening... errr... pint glass, in the smoke-free bar :D

If you're willing to accept the states right to prohibit smoking in public places what is there in PRACTICE to prevent you accepting the states right to invade Iraq for sake of example?

Seriously the prohibition of smoking in puiblic is a trivial matter but principles are principles. Theory and practice are a single indivisible whole. Unless theory is but a mask for opportunism....

So you would oppose for example health and safety legislation in the workplace that protects workers?

Or legislation against environmental pollution?

Surely, the banning of smoking in public places is an issue of public health and one that all workers should support if they are not petit-bourgeois deviationist cretins!

That said, smoking in public doesn't really bother me that much

Given your woeful ignorance of employment law, which meant that you worked for six weeks without being paid when by law you could have demanded payment after 28 days, your views on workplace legislation are besides the point now and always. I'm sorry you were conned but aren't you meant, as a member of the socialist WORKERS party, to know about such things?

I'm all for fag smokers havng to stand outside pubs to have their drug hit. In order to be able to smoke my drug of choice I always have to leave the pub, now I'll have some company...

Well said DP, I think the ban will be beneficial for us weed smokers - we'll have company and probably better outdoor facilities. Thats my prediction anyway we'll have to suck it and see !

It won't you know. :(

IME, in Scotland, the smoking ban has made pubs much more alert to this. The combination of increased spot checks by Environmental Health who can report-on to police/licencing authorities & the new licencing laws (very similar to the ones you are currently implementing), which have made membership of "anti drugs partnerships" compulsory at licence renewal make it a lot easier to get shut down for drug use now.

Few if any of the places I know who used to turn a blind-eye to someone having a joint on the terrace/beer garden are anything like as accomodating now. TBH, most are shit-scared. I've even had them coming down on me for just having a roll-up, several times now.

the park is anything goes init! :D

Again, in the Scottish context, the campaigners are working hard to get the ban reinterpreted to include "enclosure" by lines on the map & are using some guidline or other for councils (& other authorities/employers etc) not to be seen do anything that "encourages" smoking, to try & force local bans in parks, streets etc & even to atack the planning permissions of the smoking areas/public ashtrays etc that have already gone-up.

Were you really daft enough to think they would stop at this victory?

I wouldn't bank on it Loulou. Many of those skins are preserved with chemicals you really don't want to be breathing-in & years-on, can become a haven for some pretty irritating parasites, mites etc.

So you don't want to go sniffing stuffed things! :p :)

I suppose you're probably right, but then isn't living dangerously and risking cancer and other diseases half the thrill of smoking?

Realistically it could get a bit chilly being nekkid all the time though. :(
