why not make a perfume by taking a nice essential oil and mixing it with water into a spray?

Also, store it inside out (outdoors?) that'll give the inside a chance to air, rather than fester.

You got sold a wrong un. My wife bought a back when we went to morocco and it smelled bad, really really bad. The smell went away after months and months, enough for her to start using it. Then the red dye came off all over her clothes. Once the smell had gone and all the dye that was going to come of, came off, it was quite a good bag.

It smells because most leather in Morocco is tanned using traditional methods (thats animal waste products to you and me).

Best way to get rid of the pong is to get a bag of fuller's earth (or, if you're a cheapskate like me, a bag of fuller's earth-based cat litter), fill the bag with it and leave it a few weeks. I did that with a briefcase from North Africa years back and it worked a treat.

Sorry to be specific, but what exactly does it smell of?
I am sure you sould notice if the thing was so badly tanned it was going off, cos it would be runny. Other options are that this is a remnant of the tanning process, in which case you could possibly soak it out, although quite what in, I don't know, or the glue used in the manufacture.
'Proper' leatherworking glue is made out of god knows what (bones and horns, I think) and stinks to high heaven of (kind of) fish. Dunno what you would do about that.
