Smell of smoking seeping into mine from flat below

Well we can't smoke on buses, trains, stations, pubs, clubs or anywhere enclosed now.

So home is the last bastion of the smoker.

And this OP wants to stamp that out too

First they came for the druggies, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a user. Then they came for the smokers, and I didn’t speak up, because I wasn’t a smoker. Then they came for the alcoholics, and I didn’t speak up, because I was teetotal. Then they came for me, and by that time there was no one left to speak up for me.

:(

If it's affecting someone elses enjoyment of their own home then it needs to be sorted. One of the biggest plus points of splitting up with mr madz is not having to lie awake feeling sick as a dog while his fag smoke seeps up through the floor.

Oh, they're doing that already :) With substance misusers / alcoholics who fall into the lengthy reach of criminal justice, at least!

Sorted by the Landlord.

It has nothing to do with the smokers in their own home.

Some of the smoke seeps through and the OP thinks that they shouldn't do what they want to do in their own flat.

Smoke is no different than loud noise, or any other antisocial behaviour when what you do in your flat impacts negatively on the lives of those living around you.

This.

You have a right to do what you want in your own home until it starts to impact on your neighbours

If you read the OP she doesn't actually say that they shouldn't be smoking in their own home - she's asking what she can do about the smell in hers.

i had a flatmate last year who smoked in her room..and also mustve used some perfume from a poundshop by the bucketload.

when i had to walk past her room is actually made me gag.

*shudders* thank fuck i'll never see her again.

ann...its shit that youre sensitive to it..but theres nowt you can do. its in their flat innit.

This idea that it's your 'right' to choose what can affect you in the neighbourhood is clearly bollocks.

I have a bad allergic reaction to grass, others from cat hair. It's not fair to expect that my neighbours napalm their lawn, any vegetation and their roaming moggy to entertain my fussiness/oversensitivity. As long as their actions are reasonable it's for me to deal with.

I would give short shrift to someone telling me I can't smoke in my own home because they are so precious about the smell of smoke.

It stinks. If I was letting meat go off or letting animals shit in close proximity to your home, would you think you should just put up with it?

That's precisely what happens with many cats. What is done about it?

What if your neighbour likes curry and you don't...
:hmm:

Sense of reason alert!

Perfume makes me sneeze like a mad person, however, I don't go around insisting people don't wear any just because I don't like it.
