Slade

Slade, seventies anthemic gold. Love the way the violin goes nuts on Coz I love you.

Agreed, as Steve Harley said on his radio show (Sounds of the 70s) when he played it, there's nothing wrong with that record.

I won't laugh at you
When you boo hoo hoo
Coz I luv you

I won't turn my back
On the things you lack
Coz I luv you
etc.

Jimmy Lea's a very good violinist too, he did a violin solo spot when I saw Slade.

Also agree with Jeff about the Alvin Lee cover on Slade Alive! The early Slade stuff has a lot of atmosphere IMO; I loved their early single "Shape of Things To Come" with its optimism about the future.

I saw them live on the eve of my 21st (at Baileys of Leicester); they got better as the night went on (or was it the booze?). Apart from "Coz I Luv You", on the whole I liked their less popular songs better than their biggest hits; I still think "In For A Penny" (1975?) is a great song.
OMG you've just reminded me that I saw them there as well! It must've been the late 70's or early 80's - a few years past their peak. I think I was just there on a stag night or something, I wasn't a fan at all, never had been. They were massive when I was at school, but I was into other things back then. I actually like them more these days than I did back then, but that's probably just nostalgia.

Could it have been the same gig (February '79)? As I recall, Nod's jokes at the beginning (there was one about Dave Hill "needing to keep his tiddler warm") went down like a lead balloon.

There were a lot of students at the gig, like me, and Slade weren't cool amongst students back then as they were later.

Love this career profile:

Career
Interesting history:

By mid-1975, the band had become disillusioned with their lack of success in America. Feeling that they were becoming stale and had achieved all they could in Europe, Slade decided to a make a permanent move to the States and try to build a solid reputation from live performances; just as they had previously done in the UK. According to the Slade Fan Club newsletter of August and September 1975, the band took twelve tons of equipment, worth approximately £45,000 at the time.[38][39] Throughout the remainder of 1975 and 1976, Slade toured the US, often with other bands such as Aerosmith, ZZ Top and Black Sabbath, only returning to the UK for TV performances of new singles.
Ozzy Osbourne was due to play the Reading Festival in August 1980, during his Blizzard of Ozz tour, but cancelled at short notice as his band was not ready, leaving the organisers searching for a last-minute replacement. Slade were suggested, but Hill, still demoralised, had effectively left the band and initially refused to take part when asked by the other band members. Eventually, Chandler went to his home and convinced Hill to play what should have been a farewell performance in front of 65,000 rock fans, instead of Slade's disbanding and disappearing without a trace. To Hill's astonishment, the band stole the show and quickly became the darlings of the music press and radio. Highlights of their performance were broadcast on BBC Radio 1's Friday Rock Show Reading special. Afterwards, the band signed to Cheapskate Records, owned by Chandler, Lea and his brother Frank, which gave the band more control of their material and products

No surprise that Noel Gallagher claimed this track to be, "one of the best songs written, in the history of pop, ever"

I saw it in Peckham or Lewisham when it came out, ashamed to say I can't remember a single minute of it as I would have been too occupied drooling over Jimmy Lea .

I've heard Noddy talking about that gig. IIRC, there was a feeling that Slade weren't worthy of being there - maybe they were seen as uncool by then? But they ended up storming it.

My boyfriend and I, being sophisticated 19 year olds, decided we'd tolerate these old glam rock has-beens, and perhaps have a laugh at them. In the event, we were blown away. They were amazing!

I saw them at Reading in 1980! Bloody brilliant.
Having been away for a few years the daft thing is before they came on nobody knew how they would get on, either laughed off stage or go down a storm.

As it turned out they were awesome and the crowd went mental.

Thinking back, while they were were on for most of the set there was an epic 'can fight' (best one of the weekend) between the crowd in front of both stages. Happy days.

I'm sure that whole Reading set (audio) used to be on youtube but I can't find it. It's scorching. They replaced Ozzy late in the day -apparently the band was almost over at that point, Dave Hill didn't want to do it - thought they'd be laughed off stage and they totally won the crowd over. Nice.
