"Y Draig Dderw peers out of the trees onto the A5 near Tregarth ".
This could be the real deal. In Spain the horned serpent is next to 2 pillars with a tree, on a Celtic vase. arcobriga celtic vase - Google Search:

As Níðhǫggr of Yggdrasil was a tree-snake and German Oak of Donar was similar , and oaks were druidic, then the ram-horned snake of the continent was likely known in Britain. Camulos of Colchester was ram-horned. Maybe Y Ddraig was linked with oaks.

Of course Dracul means dragon in Romanian and Vlad sounds like Gwlad so maybe only a stake, made of oak, through the blood-red dragon's heart, can kill it.

    (weird is easy)

The story goes back before the Dacian flag in Roman times.

"The religious association of the dragon with the wolf or the lion is first found around the year 1120BC, on a stela of Nebuchadnezzar I, where an exact representation of the symbol of the Dacian dragon is found in the fourth quarter."
    Dacia

"Sumer was first permanently settled between c. 5500 and 4000 BC by Sumerian language people". The creative snake was basic in Sumeria and sixth-century BC Babylon where "a pair of bronze serpents flanked each of the four doorways of the temple of Esagila of Marduk.. North of the Esagila was the Etemenanki, the 'Foundation of heaven on earth', better known to us as the 'tower of Babel' ".

Marduk's mushshushu was a horned snake. The Spanish vase seems to be a doorway / entrance with a tree.

"Earth was represented by a square and Heaven by a circle; several features of the temple complex symbolize the connection of Heaven and Earth. . There are four main supportive, dragon pillars each representing a season. The structure, held up by these dragons, imitates the style of an ancient Chinese royal palace."

摩羯座 龙柱 Mójiézuò dragon pillar is Makara crocodile from Maka sea-port of south Iran where Babylon traded with India. Maka has makara "mugger" crocodiles.
    Sanskrit ra "brightness, splendour".

Suhurmas was the mid-winter Capricorn goat-fish of Babylon : mash "fish". Skt maccha "fish". Makara is India's Capricorn festival , Hindi magara machch "crocodile". The temple of Good Harvests Beijing has crocodile water-spouts.

In Nepal "as guardian of gateways, the makara (crocodile beast) image appears on the curved prongs of the vast crossed-vajra ..supports the whole structure of the mandala palace symbolizing the immovable stability of the vajra-ground on which it stands."

An odd combination of crocodile, sky trees , water-springs and food-increase is seen here:
"..the Dieri perform magical ceremonies for the multiplication of their totemic animals, no doubt with the intention of thereby increasing the food-supply of the tribe... To judge from the description of him, he seems to be one of those fossil beasts or reptiles which are found in the deltas of rivers flowing into Lake Eyre , south Australia. Such fossil bones are called kadimarkara by the Dieri." _James George Frazer - 1910.

"This legend professes to account for the origin of the fossilised marsupials and other creatures which are found in several places in the Lake Eyre district, and also for that of the mound springs which are so marked a feature of that part of Australia. These fossils are called by the tribes-people Kadimarkara, creatures which in the Mura-mura times descended from the sky-country to the earth, by means of great trees which grew on the eastern shores of Lake Eyre, and supported the sky. "A German missionary Rev. Johann Reuther sold the fossil tree to the museum in 1907.. Aboriginal people in the area believed it was the body of a Dreaming Ancestor called Kadimarkara who died and turned into stone."

Skt kadhi "ocean". Old Java kadiwas "ocean fish" . So kadimakara may be "salt-water crocodile".

Possibly the original idea of the Babylon / Beijing temple was dragons ( crocodile-fish) of the pillars holding the heavens.
