Ska Websites

Dave Mullen

Bolt Ya Radge!
I've always been a fan of British based Ska i.e. the beat the selecter specails et al. However there doesn't seem to be much about the founding fathers of ska on the web. I saw the late great Laurel Aitken in 2002 supporting the Selecter and I thought Derek Morden was class on Sunday at the Country show. Can anyone recommend a good website about the early pioneers of ska?

Derrick Morgan, i think..

just google Skatalites and their various members (Don Drummond, Tommy McCook etc).. trojan records is worth a look, think it has decent links..

Related question - does anyone know of any websites that list ska gigs in London? I've hunted around every so often for years and failed to find anything that is regularly updated...

dingwalls? twas a fucking ace gig. i saw him with the top cats in 2003 too (also ace, though he seemed to be in a bit of a mood).

when did he croak? :(

what's going on with the top cats? those were some good gigs at the fridge.

for sure.

Yep that was the one.

Saturday I think heart attack cos Derrick Morgan said soemthing about it after his set started and told everyone to do a 30 second silence.

how sad. i suppose he had a good innings, etc. :(

that dingwalls gig was brilliant though - the selecter sounded utter pants after mr aitken, who seemed to be able to do it all.

he'll be missed.

The thing that cracked me up most about that gig was all the boneheads with their nazi badges going up to the stage to shake his hand. Must have made him an honorary aryan for the night.

As for websites with upcoming ska gigs in London.... I have a couple of them bookmarked at work. I'll try and post them up here tomorrow.... They are pretty rubbish but better than nothing.

I know there is a regular ska night on in Camden on a Sunday at the Electric Ballroom. It may be monthly or fortnightly though. I have never been.

Also there is always Gaz's Rockin Blues on every Thursday at the St Moritz on Wardour St. They often have good ska bands playin there.... if ya wanna go, just PM me. It truely is a top top night. I'm always looking for folk to go to that :D

God is that still going - I went there a few times years ago. It was a weird mix of G-list celebraties - sort of Grange Hill level actors and other assorted models.

It used to be billed as London's longest running all-nighter.

Gaz Mayall is the son of legendary sixties blues guitarist John Mayall, I believe.

Still listening to ska and reggae now after all these years - probably because modern music doesn't have much worth.

Sounds great. I'm away for most of the next 6 weeks but maybe we should organise a mini Urban ska outing in September? :D

Likewise!

Have also seen the Beat 3 times (at least) this year.... they totally rock the house. Rankin Jnr is a total little laydeez man. It’s well cute. I’d still rather have ‘is Dad tho... Phwoa..... anyway, I digress...

Haven’t seen much of Topcats lately. Seen more outings from sister band Ska Cubano tho....

Bring back ska, long live ska – etc..... :D

Don’t think I can make the Club Ska one. Think i’ll be in Wales that weekend......

But I’d be up for The Beat on the 2nd?

Definitely going to Symarip with my bird. Would have liked to go to The Beat too, but I'm seeing the Cockney Rejects that night. Might do Toots on the fourth.

Gaz's Rockin Blues 4th November

Might post this on a new thread, but thought it might benefit from being on this one....

I and a few select others ;) are going to Gaz's Rockin Blues at the St Moritz on Wardour St, Soho for some skankin action on Thursday 4th Nov. Tis always a good night and it's on from 10.30 till 2-ish I think. Usually a fiver. Mostly have a band followed by a dj. Top venue. Top tunes.

Whos' up for it?!
