Ska Suggestions

mtbskalover said:
i started out giving some musical help, .

if you came onto a thread asking for some hard techno recommendations and I suggested, i dunno, Faithless, would I be helping?

Course, if we mentioned any of this stuff on a punk thread, someone would come along and say "that's not punk".

It's unavoidable.

:)

hey mate whats wrong?

so when i read the thread this guy saids he's knew to ska, im not from london so i dont no what this Redstars club plays. So i thought i'd post some recomendations of what I, as a ska fan like to listen to.

ska punk,
modern stuff
2-tone
old old stuff

im quite liking the aggrolites at the mo, they aint strictly ska, more modern white man reggae, but they are good and worth checking out. maybe this dude wont like them, but there worth a listen.

i started out giving some musical help, and now ive had to defend it cos of genre whores. genres, yeah, i ve been sucked into naming things slightly differently, falling for grindcore or whatever. but at the end of the day if it sounds good to me thats what i like and will pass on my recomendations to mates and threads like this.

My ears are open and at this stage I really appreciate your suggestions. The differences for me will come later, i'm sure!

Hi Dub - any chance of a 2 hour playlist I could download ;)

a list of tunes, like? or an actual download?

there's a million and one cheap ska comps that are pretty good - including the Trojan ones, they really are a good starting point. There's a lot of excellent Skatalites compilations too.. Recent Trojans stuff is a bit ropey (they kinda went 'celtic' :confused) but something like Spirit of Adventure is bang on. The Duallers album Melting Pot is great current London ska..

i'm not a genre whore, i'm a ska fan / ska dj who thinks that people often don't know what ska actually is.

yeah so mayb i dont no exactly what ska is, mayb i dont no who started punk, or how to spell siousxe and the bandits.

but i no what i like and would like to think im a bit of a fan of this style of music. the selecter were supposed to play near me later this month, i love them, they cancelled and now im gutted. i was to slow ordering rancid tickets and now cant see them, im gutted. music is something im reasonably passionate about. even if i dont no the whole history or proper genres.

I might start the Campaign For Real Ska..

:)
do it! i know kids who think ska started with 2-tone, and use the term to describe all this modern big shorts stuff without spitting...

i think you're being a bit defensive now. I'm not dissing your taste or telling you what to like, or trying to piss on your enthusiasm, am i?

A list of tunes would be great as would a download though it would be very cheeky of me!

Will have a look at some of the comps you mentioned and start there...

im just trying to defend my views and my first post which was just suggestions of my personal recomendations aginst your superior knowledge. yes well all no that you love you music.

put u then say no no no they are not striclty ska so u cant recomend them. why not? ska is such an open field?
punk is vast?
rock'n'roll is vast
hip-hop is vast, can u suggest breaks and beats in there 2?

so how would u describe these bands:
the clash- pioneers of mixng punk with other genres surely?
sublime- punk, ska, dub, mixing?
leftover crack?
the beat- a mix of skinhead reggae & jamacian ska?

i'm late with my urburn, but i might be able to knock up a ska comp this weekend if you want

That be very kind of you, though a list would be fine then I can download etc. Will grab you several guinesses or suchlike either at Redstar or Offline (when I eventually make it there!)

you're still being very defensive.. but anyway..

i'm not sure i can think of a single clash ska track. sublime are ska-punk, which isn't the same thing as ska. Ditto leftover crack, although perhaps less so. The Beat are obviously a ska / rocksteady band, I would never claim otherwise.

clash songs that have ska sounds, mayb also funk and reggae influnced and not striclty punk:

heres a few:
bank robber
julies been working for the drug squad
wrong 'em boyo
white man in hamersmith palais
know yor rights
red angel dragnet
hateful

Iam said:
My dad's ska is bigger than your dad's ska.

:p

Oh come on - what would you say if somebody asked for some modern UK hip hop recommendations and somebody else suggested Morris Minor & The Majors? :p

Sorry, I was only being silly. :o

I wouldn't suggest them, obviously - but I'd probably try to avoid getting drawn into an argument over whether say... Dizzee Rascal was hip hop or grime, as well.

:)

I'm not familiar with all those tracks, but I'd guess that dub reggae was a bigger influence on The Clash than ska.

In fairness, a lot of people think of ska as a catch-all term for most Jamaican music from the 60s and early 70s. It's worth getting into and learning about the distinctions between ska, rocksteady and(skinhead) reggae though. The Trojan box sets are worth buying for the sleeve notes as well as the tracklisting.

I love it too :) for some reason it puts me in a summery party mood

I'm no ska expert so I'm going to get hold of some of the stuff recommended on this thread and try and educate myself

In the mean time I can recommend 'Pannonia Allstars Ska Orchestra - Budapest Ska Mood'. I saw this lot in August and they make a field full of Hungarians and assorted Europeans skank like there was no tomorrow...they were one of my highlights of the summer :)
