ska classics

He he very interesting! I'm still at it actually, got a couple of hours to get it sorted :D

Any Ska compliation has to have some Mr Symarip..

Skinhead Moonstomp

Skinhead Girl

And Laurel Aitken and the Skatalites

Now as the Boss Skinhead says.. "get your boots on your feet.."

oh no - symarip is skinhead reggae andy - you couldn't play that at a ska night. you'd be thrown off the decks and laughed out of the club... it wouldn't make everyone go mental, oh no. ;)

tough crowd to please, the ska lovers...

Aaahh, you see, what you do is have a 'reggae night' as such you can play, bluebeat, ska, rocksteady and skinhead reggae. ;)

yep.

...and that way, hopefully the people on the dancefloor won't be stroking their chins over what genre the tunes fit in, cos they'll be far too busy skankin and enjoying themselves.

This guy could do it . . .

does anyone actually like ska but dislike rock steady or the other way round.

I reckon not. Therefore for the purposes of this fiscussion (as opposed to classifying them in an encylopedia or muesuem) they might as well be the same thing.

A few mates have a preference for rocksteady.

Lots of ska artists went on to produce rocksteady tunes, and some went on and produced reggae tunes...

It's all about the songs really, good tunes are good tunes be they from this genre or that....but, as Jefe has pointed out, the genre definition serves to assist us in knowing the difference. When someone asks you to name them ska tunes, it's good to know what ska is before answering, in the same way that if you were in Tesco and asked for jam you wouldn't want to be handed marmalade, even of you like marmalade as much as you like jam.....er, or something like that :hmm:

actually, that's a lie. it's only recently i really have got to know some ska.

my era was mainly late 70s/early 80s. roots in particular...but have also always been a massive studio one fan.

i get confused identifying genres when we start talking about channel one, rocksteady tbh but somehow always recognise a studio one song. :)

i love it i do.

when people say they want a reggae comp it's tricky when you don't know what kind of reggae they like. it's massively broad.

i'm waffling aren't i. a woman at work said she wants me to do a reggae cd for her and i've looked at her music on facebook - it's all indie stuff so no clues there...

And I give you the legend that is Pat Kelly (Hopefully going to see him in July). What a fucking voice the man has!!
