Six Nations 2006

I would never have put money on wales to win. After the autumn trials I knew england were going to walk all over wales. I predicted at least 20 points and I was right.

Wales played great rugby last year-but lets face it there was an element of catching people off guard. Judging by yesterdays performance I dont think they've expanded much on the style of play last year. Ruddock is going to have to pull his finger out otherwise I can see wales losing against every team bar scotland and italy.

I think that's very harsh.

Wales were better than anyone really expected. Some very strange refereeing decisions cost us at vital moments. Score flattered England and think they may struggle against a better team. A full strength wales would have run England evry close. I didnt lose £300 and I pulled. Great day all round.

The worrying thing is that i bet £300 on Wales to win with a 26.5 pt headstart  i thought i was in a no-lose situation. :(

What's going on? Scotland 10 France 0 after 30 mins!

go Scotland!

make that 13-0 - 32mins

I know, I want time to stop now at 20-8!

I almost can't bear to watch, I'm just so used to dissapointment! :D :D

Anyone else still in shock?  :D

(Or am I the only Scot not already elbowing my way to a bar for the first celebratory drink! :D )

France are streets ahead of everyone as their recent performances against the boks have shown, should be good for the slam with everyone else fighting for scraps.

I wouldn't be disappointed to see England finish 4/5 so Robinson gets sacked and we can get someone in who's willing to take a few risks and play some more ambitious rugby.

Well i think your prediction is out the window after the mighty scotland gubbed the slimey snails! scotland for the grand slam

COME ON SCOTLAND! YES! YES! YES!

Can't believe I have to finish this essay before I can go to the pub. They didn't like that, hell I'm surprised the French didn't surrender at half time!

I can't describe how pumped I am at that result. Got no work done while the game was on, sat in the library doormans booth listening on the radio.

Scotland for the Slam? Not gonna happen. English pack is full of genetic aberrations who'll crush our noble heroes with their vast bulk but at least it'll be a game this year. Tournament could be anyone's though if the French get themselves together.

That was glorious. Blair and Paterson were fantastic; Sean Lamont was a beast. Wish Paterson could kick in a straight line but what the hell.

Screw this; I'm going to the bar.

I dont think a full strength team wouldve won yesterday personally. They ONLY just beat England last year on pretty much the same team as most welsh people would've liked.

England played incredibly well against the all blacks and put a better performance than any of the welsh games during the autumn.

Anyway....I was born in scotland and brought up in wales so Ive got the best of both worlds ;)

On the strength of todays performance I could see us beating the Irish. Wales 50/50. Italy definately. England... they're a bit big. Think they'll bring rocks on with them and start breaking knee caps. Ah what the hell, Grand Slam, Calcutta Cup, we'll take yous all on at once.
Think I'll be at Murrayfield for the next home game. Oh yes, time to steal my dads tickets and go postal.

Bloody excellent, easily the best performance from Scotland in years and the score could have been even higher ecept for a few mistakes! Somebody should tell the guys where the sidelines are though, I've never seen so many loose balls.

Yep glad to be proved wrong though, that was simply awesome from Scotland. Looks like they've found a coach the players actually like, I was impressed by the way Hadden handled himself seems like a real gem.

Excellent, excellent, excellent.

England improving with a strong performance, particularly enjoyed Cueto's try, bit of midfield invention there finally.

Scotland fantastic, I knew they were improving from the Autumn internationals but I was beginning to worry they had permanently dropped their standards, how wrong I was. The Six Nations has been blown wide open, it's fantastic for the game.

France will come back hard, but I fancy us taking them down in Paris. The Irish were weak, so if we can beat Scotland at Murrayfield playing like that I reckon the Grand Slam is there for the taking.

Ya wee beauty. I cant believe we held on for the win. I knew we would improve but not quite by that amount. Hadden has given the players belief in themselves.
Look out Wales here we come.

I got the distinct impression that the Scottish players feel they could do better.
Their scrum and mauling(?) was immense.
Finding touch was their only real problem.

All in all, it bodes well for the rest of the tournament.

I dont see why anyone would have been caught offguard in last years 6N, as the expansive game Wales played to win the grand slam was evident in the 2004 autumn internationals in which Wales came close to beating the all blacks. Also, last years 6N was played over approx 6 weeks - plenty of time for the other teams to prepare after the first match we had against England.

As for this year, we are bereft of some of our key players due to injury and down to second or third choices in some positions. Although in all fairness England were the better team on the day, but i dont feel the score line was a true reflection of the whole game. admittedly we didnt play well at all though.

Loving the fact the 6 nations is on almost every weekend and we can watch all 3 games live. Commentators on the beeb are a bit shite especially the Moore/Butler double act, and Guscott just needs twatting, but at least I'm not handing over any cash to murdoch this year.

Very hard to predict anything this week, with Wales v Scotland and France v Ireland shaping up to be close, home sides probably going to shade it in both games. I reckon Italy will run England close for 60 mins but drop away in the final quarter.

LQ hates the 6 Nations, as I'm entirely liable to watch all 3 games on Saturday, followed by a booze-induced snooze that tends to write off nearly all of Saturday night.

But - from my selfish point of view - it's a bloody great time, particularly with the unpredicatable nature of the games this year.

I can't see anyone apart from France really challenging England this year. Unless the Irish forwards can step up several notches I don't think they can get enough ball to the backs to make a game of it - they're coached too conservatively on the whole and I can't see them grinding out a win.

This week's games are beautifully poised though. Wales vs Scotland should be particularly fascinating, but I suspect France will bounce back hard. Unless the Irish can play well in the first half and get the french crowd on their back I can see some problems for them

Very excited about this weekend's games. I absolutely love everything about rugby, and especially when it's such an open Six Nations.

England to beat Italy convincingly after a torrid first half, France to come back and win by about 15, and as for Ireland and Wales, it's anyone's guess. Should be fascinating.

It's 2 on Saturday and 1 on Sunday until the epic final weekend, which makes it even worse!

I agree with all that 100%. We are in for a fucking drubbing tomorrow.

England to beat Italy by 30+ and Wales to beat the Scots by 7-10.

oho
just been offered a chance to go out with the ambulances on call at twickenham

provided no-one gets ill/injured
ill have a great day out :D :D

Putting personality aside,do peeps reckon that Henson will be back in the team for Ireland?
he will have played only three games since the Lions tour, and not have played for nine weeks, but we are missing him. Move Watkins to outside centre and drop Luscombe for Henson or keep same team?

Well that was disappointing. What could have been a fantastic match ruined by a momentary lapse (on Scott Murrays part, the ref had to send him off, i am not defending him). Was surprised that Wales couldnt finish it off in the second half & we finished the stronger. That should not happen in a 15 v 14 game.
Still the 14 played their guts & hearts out. But cant help thinking wed have won though with 15. It would have been very close.

Well done to Italy on saturday, 16-24 would have been a great result but spolied by inexperience.

France v Ireland. One slept in the first half the other in the second.

Doesn't really work like that though, does it?

I think Wales would have won even if Scotland had kept all 15 playeras, but it would have been tighter game. Scotland played well.
