I fail to get this. I can't turn my brain off. I may well go and see a dumb action movie (I went to see Wanted last week, for example), but if something doesn't work, I can't trick my brain into pretending it does.

I didn't go and see Sin City expecting great art - I'd read some of the comics (and lots of other Miller stuff) so I knew roughly what I was getting. But beyond the visual appeal (which wears off), what I got I just didn't like at all, for the reasons stated. I can't turn a switch in my head that dumbs me down* enough to enjoy something I otherwise wouldn't.

(*I'm not saying people who like this film are dumb, before some daft twat jumps on me, i'm just saying that my reaction is my reaction, I can't somehow turn it on).

so you've read miller, and you knew you were getting a comic book movie? i don't really get what your problem with the dialogue/characters was then?

surely it's just comic book fodder?

which is fine if you don't like that, but that was probably what it's intent was?

It's not - they're all twisted in some way. I was just really embarrassed for the guy that wrote it.

Yeah wot audiences really want to see on the screen is well adjusted balanced individuals doing all the right things.

Boooooooring.

Let me see twisted fuckers ripping people limb from limb for dubious motives

Somehow I hoped the more rabidly dodgy bits of Miller's comic might get worked over for the movie. If anything, it was worse.

Adolescent wank fantasy.
Looks amazing though.

what is this wank fantasy stuff?

Don't girls look beautiful in alot of films, don't girls look sexy in alot of films? Don't men do both of these in a lot of films?

Why is sin city suddenly some sexist rampage because the ladies are wearing sexy clothes?

Note: I haven't read the rest of the thread.

Just the whole thing had the look of something drawn by someone who'd never met a real women. And the dialogue wasn't even stylised in a good way - just totally cliched. And the plots really were shit. I dunno. I just got about 1/3 to 1/2 of the way through the thing and thought "why am I torturing myself with this peurile bullshit?" and turned it off.

I'm utterly dumbfounded by this, and I don't mean that in a patronising way. I just honestly don't know where to start :(

Visually enjoyed it though that waned, other than that thought it was a bit sh*t...wouldn't buy it on DVD and the actor whatever his name is f*cks me off no end....pretty crappy

I didn't say that Marius - I was agreeing with Suplex that the presentation of men in it is pretty negative as well. I'm quite happy to watch films with twisted individuals in them but the whole thing can be done in a more interesting way than in Sin City - which was just done TO LOOK GOOD.

A lot of people are saying it's something you can only enjoy once - like McDonalds in that way. I would agree. There is nothing to it.

So you only care about what you're saying when you're talking to me? That's sweet, dude, maybe I've misjudged you :)

You seem to be labouring under the illusion that you're like a cross between Oscar Wilde, Bill Hicks and Bill Bailey.

Trust me, you're not a funny man.

er okay, can you explain yours though?

Do you know, I really can't be arsed. I don't know where to start, and Sadken will chime in with more fuckwitted "hilarity" as i do so.

TO be honest, I'd also feel happier if a woman explained it.

You'll notice that almost no women appear to like the film, judging by the poll, which tells its own story

oh and just because you say 'i don't mean it in a patronising way' doesn't automatically stop you being patronising.

that kind of 'oh i despair with electrogirl's stupidity' is exactly the kind of thing which does make you patronising.

it's like people who say, 'i'm not be nasty but, you look shit'

well, you are being nasty.

sorry you're sad, but i honestly don't think you've backed up your 'wank fantasy' views on the women in the film.

I th ink you may be applying the meaning of wank fantasy too closely. Millers work has violent, flawed men indulging in consequenceless violence. Violence that is in fact justified by a wafer-thin plotline. adolescent power fantasy perhaps might be more accurate, and yeah thats an accusation you could aim at a lot of superhero stuff.

I'm really not you know. Perhaps you're being defensive?

I'mn not despairing with your stupidity by any means, but sometimes things that appear self-evident to one person are even harder to explain to someone else.

And like I say, I don't have the energy or the will, especially not with ken chipping in from the sidelines.

what the fuck have women voting got to do with it? Not many women have voted either way, so maybe they just haven't seen it? It's hardly the most academic of polls in any case is it so I'd hardly be using it to back up any argument you have regarding the film.

I'm a woman and I wasn't offended by the portrayal of women.

I don't think Im beinf defensive, really. I mean, I've only asked you to explain your argument but you've just kind of, well, rolled your eyes at me in a kind of 'oh i can't be bothered to do this with you' way.

If you can't be bothered, fine, but don't imply it's because I'm too stupid to discuss it with.

Which I haven't done at any point. Like I say, your reaction says everything about your own defensiveness and insecurities and precisely nothing about why I don't want to get into yet another fucking argument about sexism.

But have it your way, it's a harmless bit of knockabout fun and the women in it are ace, like Ninja tarts-with-hearts. It's great, and I'm sorry I didn't realise this sooner.

boo fucking hoo.

the representation of women in it as barely clothed muppets pressured into stripping or prostituition in a society where there clearly aren't many other options and men are constantly required to help dig them out of their situations is a wank fantasy.

As is Jessica Alba about to get cut up and raped by a little yellow man, but totally not scream because she's "strong" and wants to be a lawyer or something is a wank fantasy.

Her dual presentation as a sex bomb or little girl and nothing in between is a wank fantasy

Doesn't that Rodriguez lass give Clive Owen shit and shut up and snog him after he hits her at some point? That's a wank fantasy.

these things don't bother you but they bother me.

I seriously don't like Bill Bailey at all so that's accidentally quite wounding. I do trust you, Jefe. I don't know why, but I'd trust you to the ends of the earth.

isn't is time you dropped it ken - he's not actually rowing with anyone so perhaps you should stop the windups?

Well, firstly, he kept popping up to call me a misogynistic racist for four months till I finally showed him up about a week ago and he's never said anything since. Secondly, I know it's quite awful of me but I'm a small and petty man and he keeps biting, so it's pretty funny to me. Although, obviously, I am deeply unfunny.

I tried to stop earlier, I really did, but then he'll make some shitheadedly patronising comment like he's the oracle of all popular entertainment and I'll feel like having a go at bringing him down a peg or two or highlighting his hypocrisy or summink like that. I dunno....I think, to be honest, we're locked in a dance to the death like two spies grappling with eachother as they fall out of the aeroplane.
