Simon Hughes .. He's a Raver!!

"But for dealing, it’s always right to consider punishment, including the most severe prison sentences."

So said Simon Hughes, lib dem hopeful and all round schmoozer

However the void has been contacted by a member of the public (snitch) who has some illuminating information on Simon Hughes' past social life:

"it was around 1995/96 and I was working as a fundraiser for Guy's Hospital at the time. Simon Hughes was an active and popular supporter of the Save Guy's campaign, and regularly attended events in support of the hospital."

"well one night one of our team had organised a party at the Emporium nightclub to raise money for the children's wards. It was a fairly posh old do, with Seb Fontaine spinning the tunes and a smattering of celebs"

"Well, in walks Simon Hughes, pretty young girl on his arm, and it wasn't long before he took to the floor"

"and he was proper 'aving it man, he danced solidly for a good couple of hours, dripping with sweat, red faced and gurning with the best of them"

"now I didn't actually see him take anything, but I've been raving a long time and I know what someone on a top pill looks like"

"and that's how Simon Hughes looked"

Simon Hughes has supported reclassifying ecstasy to Class B, as well as scrapping imprisonment for possession of any drugs.

A step in the right direction perhaps, but will not have any impact on the most serious issue surrounding ecstasy use which is lack of health and safety controls, and manufacturing standards leading to impure and dangerous pills.

However it may be possible that old Hughsey has a vested interest - so spill the beans Hughesy - you a pill head or what?

Didn't do David 'the hoover' Cameron any harm to be associated with past chemical indiscretions, and lets face it, being a bit of a caner seems to be par for the course for the lib dem leader.

And if you do like to indulge, then it ain't very fair to lock yer dealer up is it.

I'd be very, very surprised if hughes were ever a recreational drug taker. His main interest (apart from politics) is Church.

Quite, just because some people need chemical assistance to stay upright for more than a couple of hours does not mean everyone does.

Is this the same Simon Hughes whose "supporters" in south London ran racist and homophobic campaigns against opponents?

The Liberals were alleged to have ran a homophobic campaign against Tatchell, never heard any allegations of racism.

I thought that was the Labour party, despite the fact tatchell was standing for them at the time?

alleged? They DID.
and BA's right about Hughes, but libel is libel.

"Island Homes for Island People". Lib dems on the Isle of Dogs before Beacon was elected. Hughe was campaign mastermind, passes blame onto local lib dems. Race baiting and queer baiting. What a nice man.

As was intended i suspect. Both fighting for the same vote.

Getting off-topic this, but seeing as the topic is whether Hughes is a pill'ead or not, I reckon it's fair game...

So what was the lefty objection to prioritising local people in local government housing policy? It sounds like a good idea to me.

That wasn't what the leaflet was intended to imply.

In the context of rising local racism that was fulled by rumours about unfair housing allocation (esp towards 'asians') it was clearly an attemot to appeal to white voters on a raical basis.

Straight to the pont there Butcher's!

Anyway back to la Hughes. If he's a SE London MP, any idea what team he supports? Millwall? Crystal Palace?

I'm genuinely shocked, I've met him and though I dont share his politics he's one of the few MPs I have real time for. He's always struck me as a genuinely good and kind man and very sincere.

He helped the family of a guy I know who were the victims of a particularly foul murder above and beyond what you could reasonabaly expect for an MP, I believe he's still receives police protection because of the case.

Genuinely saddened :(

I woulden't attach too much importance to what I said. I believe the person who told me, but I dont know if it was a one off or not or the circumstances surrounding it.

He's a Millwall season ticket holder

I think it's worth looking at his quote in full

“Possession of class C drugs should not be an arrestable offence. Liberal Democrats will seek to take out this proposal from the Criminal Justice Bill when it comes to Committee just before Christmas or in the New Year.

“Arrest and imprisonment simply for possession of any drug is inappropriate. For possession of class A drugs and for dealing, prison would clearly be appropriate.

“But for dealing, it’s always right to consider punishment, including the most severe prison sentences.

“Anybody who is seeking to sell or deal drugs of any sort in or near places where children and young people under the age of majority go, for example, must expect to be punished severely.

“The Government should be using the Bill to send a clear message that the punishment will fit the severity of the offence and the class of drug involved. Ministers are in danger of creating a muddle.”

Seems to me to be highly progressive, and not the sort of political attitude to be smearing. Politicians are sometimes involved in a world of compromise... targeting the threat of prison to those hawking drugs in school playgrounds is hardly a great one. Why shoot someone batting on your behalf?
