Siberia starts to thaw...

agreed entirely, JC2 is a slightly clever, but just as useless version of leadhead
Disagree entirely there...JC2 has a far superior intellect to yours actually Jezza. You just disagree with his politics.

With all due respect Mrs M. .... JC constantly derails and deliberately disrupts threads, this ia obvious to all those that attend the World Politics and Mid East forums.

He does it not for the reason of debate but to disrupt.

I don't find his arguments particularly intelligent at all to be honest.

I can't remember the last time someone reported a JC2 post though, the last time I can definitely remember someone reporting one of his posts was johnny reb who got banned shortly afterwards and that's probably two years ago so I can't really comment on that. JC2 is definitely brighter than Jezza though, and I'm not saying Jezza isn't bright either...anyway, I'm off to pick up my wages and go to the pub.....the weekend beckons! Have a good one everyone!

Look, it's your own silly faults if you insist on indulging these supposedly deliberate derailers - if you think they're taking the piss then why can't you simply ignore them and get on with the matter in hand?

OK it's nice to have an opposing view to argue against, if only for the sake of meaningful discussion, but it honestly astounds me that so many people seem to want to discuss issues like the environment etc with the likes of pbman and chums - it's like discussing the subtleties of romance with someone like Fred West, FFS!

Sorry I don't mean to offend JC because I value his views at the right time and place, but if someone is being disruptive why can't the wise old posters who should know better just ignore them!

Sure I know I'm failing to practice what I'm preaching right here by getting involved, but on threads like this one I'd really rather read about the topic at hand than the pointless tittle tattle that so many people create and then start complaining about..!

(Er, here's hoping it isn't feeding time under the bridge and I'm the mug with the buns! ;) )

I find the ignore button wonderfully useful, but I could wish that more did.

If you can ignore the fact that he's obviously Noam Chomsky in disguise, pbman is a fabulous creation. He livens up these boards immensely, and I for one hope he has not gone for good.

I have to admit I would be more interested in what pbman had to say if he didn't constantly and relentlessly bludgeon threads to death with repeated postings one after another after another ad infinitum - sadly I have had to put him on ignore if only to avoid wearing out my scroll wheel :( ...Still, love him or loathe him, you can be sure that he won't be able to stay away for long.

Anyway can't remember if this one has been put up yet: Siberian taiga will soon go from carbon sink to source  ...and it mentions the taiga giving off large quantities of methane as well - would this be because of melting permafrost or is it some other process?

If not Chomsky then (as I accused him a couple of years ago) then an Ivy League professor of a humanities subject, with tenure and way too much time on his hands.

Loathe his views but can't really dislike the bloke (if he exists!) Like I find with a lot of Americans.

Well, in that case I may report one or two of his disruptive posts on another thread. The thing with JC is that he uses humour and the occasional intelligent phrase but when you actually unpack his posts, they contain next to nothing. I disagree, he is not as bright as he appears. There's an auld saying that sums him up rather well, "He's all mouth and no trousers".

In other cases, he is out to wind up other posters. On one particular thread that I am currently involved in, he constantly pops up with irrelevancies in order to disrupt the thread. He has an agenda when it comes to certain threads, particualrly those that are critical of Bush or US foreign policy. "Aw bless, JC's made another joke. What a wit, He's sooooo harmless". If wit were shit, he'd be constipated and he's far from harmless.

I think phil would say that being something of a troll himself.

Oh my god, we are so doomed....

Warming hits 'tipping point'

I'm afraid I'm in one of my occasional climate change nervous breakdowns, so I have no constructive suggestions whatsoever...

Matt
seen reports recently about permafrost thawing:
Something Stirs: What Will Happen as Permafrost Thaws? | DiscoverMagazine.com

Exclusive: Some Arctic Ground No Longer Freezing—Even in Winter
and over the past few years about the potential emission methane in siberia and the arctic like a great fart. we are, as matt s says, so doomed :(

Wasn't Peak Oil supposed to have reduced us all to living in a Mad Max movie by now?

I'm not saying that what's happening in the Arctic isn't important, but I was getting fed up with misanthropic doom-wanking with neo-Malthusian overtones way back then too.

I imagine folk reading this archived thread in about 100 years - some group of survivors eeking out a living in a storm-laden sweatbox, huddled round a 20 year old holo-top and saying:

"They fucking knew it, and look, this lot didn't give a toss for 13 years let alone the rest of the world, no wonder we have to recycle our piss every day to clean our teeth, f*** you dead folk! Thanks for using up the damn planet and leaving us scraps. Are any of this lot in cryo-tubes we should bring them back and let them try and live on cockroach oil, I'd piss in their tubes if I didn't need a wash later."

Yeah but I’m dead and they’re not so fuck ‘em

Yeah but I’m dead and they’re not so fuck ‘em

You see, that's the kind of quote we'll be remembered by. If you awake to anal probe by little grey men, they might not be aliens but folk from the far future come back to punish you.

I dunno about you, but I certainly do not bear the common person of 1918 any ill-will. The ruling classes of that generation might have fucked things up, especially in the Middle East, but I see absolutely no point in wasting my precious time and energy hating ordinary people who have been dead for a century.

But they didn't know how fucked up it got...we know we've been slowly destroying the planet since...late 60s...or basically since The Club of Rome issued their Limits to Growth document.

Although I agree you can't really blame individuals, we're just trying to live our lives.

It's not a question of knowledge. I don't think one needs to go to university to figure out that slaughtering the youth of Europe and carving up the Middle East isn't likely to produce great outcomes.

It's a question of power. Who controlled the means of production back then? Who still does now?
