Shunt Club, London Bridge. Absolutely amazing.

I couldn't do this one - looked like an amazing night. I went with Eme a while back and saw half of 808 State doing some sort of sound threatre reading of a sci fi story :D We drank in a makeshift library and got wet in some art piece in a dark tunnel while someone played mournful violin out of sight.

I would have gone mad if you and Ken had gone electrogirl and I’d missed both of you!

We would've definitely made sure we'd gone if we thought you might be there!

This was a few weekends ago we were going to go though. So it isn't as much of a nearmiss as it seems. Phew.:)

Oh, we were gonna go a few weeks back. May well do again in the future, cos I always use it as my "showing off place" to show off how cool, in the know and on point I am to people who live outside of London although now editor has found out about it, I might have to relocate to an empty branch of Woolies where crack addicts hold poetry slams or something.

a freinds band played there last autumn when it first opened.i was pretty impressed with the space and the old 70s pin ball machines too.:D
its a great space for all kinds of things, fantastic spooky atmosphere. there was a big all night performance art thing there on easter sunday that a freind told me about but it was..£20:eek: so there was no way i was gonna go to that.i'm interested in going again as long as its normal day membership price..

IMHO some of clinetele the 1 time i went, seemed to be erm "normal businesspeople" who had joined the place as a drinking den rather than for the cultural activities on offer.my freinds band isnt very well known and crap at promoting themselves so there were more drunk businessmen then experimental music fans on the night they played;).it didnt spoil my night in anyway tho.

i beleive SHUNT is getting better known now and hopefully they will continue to have plenty of left field events on, included in the £5 day membership.glad to know about the ID thing, cos i never carry it.im not keen on places asking for it TBH but of course its not the staffs fault, pressure is being put on them im sure:hmm::(

This must have been when it reopened, because I started going there at the end of 2006...

Yeah, I wanna second that. We did discuss how cool we think you are though.

We took a Dutch friend when he was visiting in 2007, and we were certainly showing off, as he is someone who is into the alternative lifestyle over in Amsterdam. He was certainly impressed, so I guess it worked :D

(although he has probably known me for long enough to know that I am not much into the alternative lifetyle these days!)

It's just spot on for that sort of thing, isn't it? I try for maximum nonchalance when wandering down into the deep backend as well.

When they did Tropicana there, there was one bit where a hearse was driven through the whole place really slowly, with dancing girls wearing black feathers on their heads dancing on top of it, as a topless long haired japanese dude played rocking guitar at the head of the procession. All that and I still came away thinking it was below the standard they'd set before!

I was told Shunt is closing in the next couple of months.

In February everyone was saying that the vaults would be closed for good in May. Sad, sad day.

The Shard is being built right on top of London Bridge and the vaults will therefore be closed and re-opened as a shopping complex in 2012.

Hmm, the Shard site has already been cleared. It's next door to Shunt (it's the bit below-right of the yellow and red areas on that map upthread) but I didn't think works for it would extend any further into the station. Shame.

The final blow will come with the station redevelopment. The connection between the tube and the statio nwill have to go right through it.

I had no idea it was closing so soon! :(

Even more reason why I should have forced myself out of the fucking house on Saturday, instead of sitting around feeling sorry for myself. I guess I will never go to the Shunt Lounge again, now, which is a shame.

Its a bit hit and miss.
Don't generally like it at weekends as its overpriced and harder to see all the various entertainment on offer.

Went to a n.y.e rave there a few years back and had deja vu the first time I went to Shunt. Was speaking to someone who said they had to cart out bags and bags of shit from the rave before they could open up. :hmm:

It was, without doubt, the best place I've ever seen the Actionettes perform.

Having them dancing on two stages simultaneously made it really exciting and the crowd loved it.

Eme said it was amazing to be on the top stage and see people stretching all the way back along the vaults.

Dunno if I've understood this all correctly, but if I have then it's a bit shitty of TfL to be calling it "The Shard" frankly. It's like saying to the Shunt theatre group "thanks for putting our basement to such imaginative and profitable use over the years, now piss off – oh and by the way, we're sort of nicking your name too"

The skyscraper currently under construction is called the Shard because it's a great big fragmented spike shape, like a Shard of Glass. TfL will take office space in it, but the name is nothing to do with them.

shame it's going, it seemed like a really nice venue for combined arts & music events. is the milk float still there??

seems like every good venue over a certain size is being redeveloped these days. i'm just waiting for some property developer to fuck over the Forum or brixton academy next...

Everytime I wander past this place, the queues are HUGE! I went ages ago, but haven't been back since the queues have been that big.

The milk float left ages ago :)

We were on the guest list so were able to hop to the front, but the funny thing was that it wasn't even slightly packed inside.

It never is. Their fire safety limit on numbers is really small, because it is not based on the floor space, which is massive, but it is about the number of exits, which are not very many at all. They calculate how quickly it could be evacuated in the event of a fire etc., and that is the limit on number. This means that the venue, even when it is at capacity, is not full at all, and this makes the experience a million times better. IMHO, of course.

It always amazed me how long the queues were when we left each time (and how pleased some people at the beginning of the queues were to hear that we were leaving and not just going for a cigarette! :D)

i remember thinking that it was a bit of a death trap when it was squatted and rammed with several thousand people, i turned up in the morning completely fucked and thought i was walking into hell. fucking great party.

That is a brilliant quote!

Giles..

Oh my god.
A horrific place. Full of yuppies who if they think you are single will grope you without a second's thought.

Where were they then? I was on a night out without my boyfriend and I could have done with being felt up

That first pic is amazing Ed. Top club - totally blew me away and was a fab night. Multi-level Actionettes ftw
