Shriekback

Tried to work out when I saw them at the Dublin Castle. They were doing their version of Fluke's "Tosh", before it was released as a track on the CD single. And that was released in 1995. 22 years ago. Fucking hell, I feel old.

Still have Care on vinyl somewhere, and a bunch of their other early/mid-80s stuff.

Yeah they played some shows in '94 and '95. I am v jealous of you seeing them then! They released the stuff they played at the '94/'95 shows on an CD in '99 called 'Naked Apes and Pond Life' (thanking 'all those who came to the shows in 94 & 95' in the sleevenotes).

I have some copies if you'd like me to send you one (or there is a compilation of rare stuff called Aberrations which has the Naked Apes disc as a free extra if you'd prefer that - pretty sure I have a spare). Send me a PM if so.

Shriekback - Aberrations 81-84

I only saw them once at a one-off reunion in 2001 in Brussels. It was Luc Van Acker's 40th birthday so it got quite messy - probably my most fun and memorable weekend ever.

A lot of the stuff like Care and the other 80s mixes and 12" singles have been released recently (inc Peel Sessions) on CD but all sold out now.

I've got Aberrations and Naked Apes... and most of the other pre-2000 stuff and what seems to be an ever larger number of compilations (Infinite, Evolution, Priest and Kanibals, Y Records Years, Dancing Years ...).

I chatted to Lu Edmonds at the Dubln Castle shows; they didn't play much of their older stuff which is fair enough as they'd moved on from when I'd first encountered them through their time with Y Records.

I think Jam Science/Oil and Gold was my favourite period. I was dissuaded from buying the Y Records version of Jam Science by a manager of the band when he spotted me picking it up in HMV on a trip to London on the 80's. Still haven't bought that version.

I've not got around to the 6 or so albums of new material that they've released since 2001.

I think it is the Care / Jam Science period for me. Loads of great dancy and clunky 12" mixes.

The Y version of Jam Science is quite good, but the band hate it. Though they did include the two tracks on it that weren't on the Arista version on a recent comp. Apparently just a bunch of demos that Y rushed out once they heard the band were leaving fora major label.

Some of the stuff released since is worth a listen. Life in the Loading Bay is great. And there are the Tench, Care, Jam Science remasters on disc (as well as a couple of other comps) which were all done in limited runs. All excellent. I'm currently trying to persuade them to press up a couple hundred more of each as tour merch. I am sure they'd sell plenty.

Manchester and Glasgow gigs cancelled "owing to all sorts of logistic complexities". :(

London still on.

"Don't worry though, there will more.."

The Woodentops announced as support for Shepherds Bush.
Saw them a few times in the 80's but been meaning to see them since they reformed. Even had tickets for one gig but couldn't make it.
So that works out quite well :)

Ok so I have a spare ticket for Shepherds Bush, anyone interested?

It's this Saturday, 3rd June.

Well that was a great night out.
Met up with Maggot and discobastard in the pub before hand. Got to chat to Barry Andrews from Shriekback as well; he was very relaxed or at least doing a very good job of covering up any nerves.

The Woodentops did a good, if brief, set including Rolo going walkabout in the crowd.

Shriekback were great, opened with "Lines from the Library" from Care, played lots of "Oil and Gold" and seemed to be really enjoying themselves.

Played most, if not all, of their better known tunes including this:

I was pretty hoarse on Sunday morning, having <ahem> joined in the singing towards the end :D

Thanks to discobastard for arranging the pre-gig meet-up.

Looking forward to doing again, without a 22 year gap!
