Shout out tracks

I've heard a few of these over the years, but not many. I like them, even though it's basically like bragging about your book shelf (is it? Maybe it isn't...)

Anyway, I think this will be a short thread, but post them here if you got 'em:

Prequel - Saints

Daft Punk - Teachers

house music is full of this kind of thing these days....guy earnest talking about hosue music over the top of a track.....blah blah paradise garage...blah blah.... blah blah chicago...:D

Heres one, but theres hundreds more (i dont really know the name of them though)....talking starts at 3mins

Hip-hops gonna have a lot these too.... Gangstarr's Jazz Thing springs to mind....reggae too....how about Feel Like by Beres Hammond (better examples im sure out there)

I personally think they are more than simply bragging/shout out tracks...the history of acknowledging, showing respect and passing on knowledge through music very much chimes with oral traditions and taking advantage of the medium of music to do that. It isn't restricted to bigging up other musicians either. It's very much about education and creating consciousness too.

Great example of the trend is Gary Byrd.

Very true!
Love the Shabba one for that - in a field like Dancehall which is so competitive and has so much badmouthing going on in it (Shabba playing more than his fair part in that), its hard to find a more respectful-to-other-artists piece of music.

I do miss physical formats of the past for this, especially hiphop tapes, which were always filled with hundreds of shouts on them. Really built the culture and spread awareness
Some rave/jungle 12s occasionally used to have some shouts to friends and djs on them, either printed on the label or even scratched in the run out groove

And as for diss tracks......

Skip to 45 minutes for live shout outs from TP. He even gives himself a shout out (many times throughout the mix) :D

Or don't skip, actually. Because you'll miss out on one of the best mixes ever

Haha, that's uploaded by a friend of mine!
I saw TP play live (with telephone instead of headphones) in London once and he practically did a sermon at the end.

What do you mean? I have a vague recollection of him being a bit unreliable and something about him begging his fans to pay his tax bill
Exactly that.

He took money for gigs and didn't do them and ended up in massive debt to club promoters around the world. Went cap in hand to fans to bail him out.
