but my point is, if they cannot strike there should have a mechanism in place for greviances which is clearly not happening .
That's what they've got the arse about ... there has been a pretty binding arbitration process in place for some years now, but this time the government have seen fit to ignore it. Regardless of who the group is, if you take way a right that other groups have there must be some reasonable alternative put in place.

Why on earth would anyone opt for binding 'abritration' when we've all just seen that the govt will ignore it when it considers it expedient and leave those 'workers' signed up to the agreement unarmed and on the backfoot?

But nurses don't really have the right to strike now, do they? Oh, they have it legally, but it's not realistic to expect them to do it. So binding arbitration would be better than what they have now.

ok, well how about arbitration that's binding for the government, but not for nurses?

Maybe; to be honest, I haven't put a lot of thought into arbitration or other alternatives to strikes. I just know that nurses aren't going to strike these days, so they need something else to protect them at least a bit.

Irish Nurses have stuck over the last few years, Danish nurse on strike last month, UK nurses struck in ther late 80s early 90s, manchester nurses struck recently -wildcats happens across the boad when workers think the conditions demand it irrespective of any formal no-strike agreement by the union.
