Should It Stay Or Should It Go?

and since we're talking about purges , was it you I lent my Elvis Live record to ? I know it went to someone but I can't remember who !

Sell it all to me, buy PieEye a nice necklace and yourself a new van... Result! :D

The "musical story of your life" has some truth in it, but ultimately you will end up like one of those old ladies with 48 cats if you carry on hoarding. Getting rid of stuff is a good way of re-evaluating your past and the memories are still there.

The problem with this being...? :p

Vinyl ain't my problem, but books are, and I just won't get rid of them. Not because there isn't a good reason to, in some instances, but because ... well, someday I might just pick one of them up again and enjoy it.

Maybe you could return the records you've borrowed from people over the years. That might create some space.
:p

("Retard Picnic". I'll never play it, but I'd still like it back. I'll swap it for your Pogues and Nick Cave singles!)

I haven't even got a working turntable, but I am not parting with my records!

They are my history, my childhood, my life. Whatever, but they are staying.

They were in my loft in the old house but, when I moved here, I put them in the sitting room so I can look at them occasionally.

Ye gods

I really don't get the hoarding mentality. As someone who can fit all her earthly possessions into a large car, the idea of having so much stuff I don't need or really want seems pretty out there.

If you're hanging onto this stuff because you will play it again and it's not annoying you because you trip over it every morning, then keep it. Otherwise, it's just stuff, FFS. what the hell is stuff compared to everything else in life?

get rid, get rid, get rid......

keep the best, sell all that you haven't played and won't - I bought mrs.yolk a chris ofili print with my money from getting rid of just a few.

you'll have more space, your remaining vinyl can breathe easier and look a bit nicer.

The cost of vinyl has been going through the floor. You should have sold em 8 years ago. Even rare records go for fuck all compared with the glory days. Sell whilst you can still make some green.

but there are some i may never play again but do really love. That sounds paradoxical I know.

Will I ever play Happy Flowers' Yesterday I Was Been Bad again?

I doubt it (unless i want to terrify any future kids)

Do I love it as a record?

Yes.

is this all about a fear of my own mortality? Is that what all collecting is? :D

you can still love things you don't have........ possessions aren't love dub

Indeed. This whole thing about liking something you will never play again - it's a memory already. Let it go.

What is important is you. Your relationship to music and what it means to you is part of that. The actual records for the most part aren't important at all.

It's just bullshit really, and deep down you know that, I think.

But y'know everyone has a certain level of bullshit and there is worse stuff out there than having stupid amounts of records. (Not that this lets you off the hook, mind! )

A friend of mine who had over 18,000 records used them to make furniture. His dining table was 2 massive stacks with a piece of wood on the top and a tablecloth, and his kids slept on home-made beds built from records

He had to get rid of them all when his wife divorced him, though :D

Keep them, ffs. Everyone needs a glorious obsession. You wanna see my wool stash ;)
