Should I upgrade to Vista?

Aie!
Well I decided to order it anyway - not yet decided to install it just yet. Anyway - apparantly it will take 4-6 weeks to arrive anyway - once I manage to order it. Thing is, to order it I need a COA. And I can't find it. Can anyone help? I got no disks with the new laptop, everything is already installed. HELP!!

We're told it is illegal to obtain software from thepiratebay.org

But is it? Let's have a little think about this. That site operates legally where it is situated. So if you physically went to that jurisdiction and bought -- or were given -- your warez, you would be infringing no applicable laws. So far, so good. You pack up your legally acquired CD and head back to the UK. Is it legal to bring that property you legally acquired in another jurisdiction into the UK? Why, yes, in this case it is. Hmmm. It's very hard to avoid the conclusion that it must be legal to import the same property into the UK down the wires, instead of by physically making the trek.

Don't get me wrong. Copyright laws are fine and dandy by me. I support the General Public License for software, and that *depends* on copyright law to be enforceable. Nor do I want people taking my poems and twisting their meaning, or passing them off as their own. It's just that I'm not at all sure that it's a proper matter for state involvement if someone quotes or uses one of my poems (or prosaic ravings here) without my permission.

Rather than involve the cops in what is essentially a private dispute, it would be better to have a copyright system that the public can understand and respect.

Call the people you got it from and tell them to send you the proper XP install disc. You paid for it, you should have got it.

I finally found the COA - on the bottom of my puter. Anyway, I ordered it for 22 euro plus 13 postage. Now I've got an email saying I have to send them a copy of the receipt for the computer! Fuck me, how annoying. It better flaming work when I get it.

Directx10 is Vista only, anyway around this?

Apparently directx10 will be Vista only, my question, can there ever be some sort of hack, extra driver that allows XP to run D10 as good as Vista, or is it technically impossible?

A funny vista story:- My brother has installed it on his machine, so he downloads the latest ati drivers for vista, clicks the install , about a quarter way through the install, the machine decides to reboot , so after hitting continue at boot because it complains about not being shutdown properly, he gets back into vista, and his machine is using something like a standard vesa driver, real slow when moving and resizing windows.
He was annoyed, i was laughing.

Reading this linked doc has made me very cross. The benefits of Vista seem to be in me paying a smallish shed load of cash for a OS that fucks up my computer?
Yeah, well it's not been designed for *your* benefit, has it? You just pay for it.

It's been designed for the benefit of people who own "intellectual property" that evidently needs protecting from folks like you.

Did you stop laughing long enough to wise him up a tad? Or it is too much fun to watch him getting royally screwed by MS?

Fuck em. I love downloading me and will only give it up when I am dead.

You pay for a license to "use" it rather to own it. But there are alternatives out there if you want something designed either *for* you or *by* you...

And here's one such alternative. It's said to be doubling its installed base every eight months. It's secure, easy to use, easy to upgrade. It doesn't need a firewall, it doesn't need anti-virus measures and it's still safe on the 'net.

And the price is right too.

It's Ubuntu. Linux for human beings.

upgrade to vista? i still run 2K

ok i technically dual boot XP but i have only ever booted to XP a hanfull of times to run XP only software

and no linux geeks never can resist putting the boot in

don't get me wrong linux has a multitude of advantages but it has it's flaws too

never did manage to play all my anime on it ... or get proper 3d rendering

Jeez, don't you Linux geeks ever get tired?

So... Pointing out there's an alternative to an o/s that is giving u75 posters problems is *bad*...?

If you want to use Vista then go and do so. Its not my PC thats going to be screwed up by it & and its not my DRM nightmare...! :D

Heh, I've even got Win98lite. That's Windows '98 with Internet Explorer code stripped out.

The irony is that Win98lite is a far leaner, cleaner, quicker and more stable system than straight Win98 with IE.

Nah, I think the poster is saying that it's annoying for other folk to have a system that works for them, and isn't tiring to use. I can see their point. It most be especially irksome for someone that's paid good cash for a system that they can't control :D

If its not up to a merchantable standard then why don't they ask for their cash back...?

But I *know* that Linux exists - I'm not interested in it though! Thats why I was asking should I upgrade to Vista, and not 'Should I change from Windows to Linux?'. Linux maybe is better, but my techy mates all tell me not to bother, and to be honest when I see the pain of people who try to get it to work, it looks like a nightmare unless you're a complete tech head. Its the same as sodding Mac geeks banging on all the time - macs are lovely but I don't want one of them either! So, I just don't understand why Linux geeks can't accept that I suppose. Because, if anything, it puts people off I reckon. I know I'd be scared to try Linux in case I suddenly grow an anorak or something.;)

Err my Windows XP works like a dream thx.:D

I'm thinking 2011 will do me just fine.

:)

(unless you count the subnet of machines I've already got, that is)
