The hoighty toighty have a different idea of savings though don't they. "I'm brassic" to them means either Aunt Edna hasn't conviniently died yet, or Papa hasn't wired through the £5k allowance he promised.

Straight.

is BA hoighty toighty then??

that's probably why he finds laminate flooring distasteful ;)

Innit. He should just sack a couple of the household staff if money's a bit tight.

The luxury of being able to live off savings is the reserve of the priviledged though.
What if the 'luxury' of savings is at least partly due to, say, choosing not to eat out, choosing not to spend much on drinking even though you go to the pub quite a bit, choosing not to go on certain nights out because of the cost etc.

Jesus, you decide not to become a fucking slave for the next few months and suddenly your whole lifestyle is in question

But you're right when you get down to it - I am middle class and I have been duly denounced

hm. were you on drugs? did you attempt to find it in the wardrobe? were you wearing a police woman's uniform? :)

I did check all wardrobes, I wasn't on drugs but I was quite young, which is sometimes similar and I wasn't wearing a policewoman's outfit sadly.

Not a bastard thing!

Brainy - can you categorically state that you're not a "Trustifarian" ?

:)

Running water and electricity is the reserve of the priviledged too. Unless brainaddict made his fortune exploiting workers then I'm not going to get too worked up, and certainly not view him as 'the other half'.
I didn't suggest that

Hey, I didn't mean for the thread to go this way but I was surprised that you managed to live off savings for a while. All I'm saying is that it's a priviledge.

Feel that weight on your shoulders BA? That's a cross you're bearing :(
Nah, I think it's just the straps of my Genuine Trustafarian (TM) hemp rucksack. I did get confused for a moment though.

Not always. I know of plently of people who manage to save on low incomes. Some people just have better budgeting skills.
I managed to save enough to go and live in Italy for a few months whilst working at Pizza Hut on less than £3 an hour. Admittedly, I was working very, long days and rarely went out but I still managed it. It did take me awhile.

I appreciate not everyone has the same opportunities but to suggest only the well off can save is inaccurate IMHO.
I can't save on my income and I'm not poor. I AM useless with money though. :o

Nah, that was me and my big mouth :o

Just feeling a bit chippy and skint at the moment.....cross with myself...I can't eat principles, but I would have choked on the money if I'd stayed.

Well, yes, but as someone pointed out, we're all privileged not to be in danger of starvation when the crops fail as a large percentage of the world is.

Some people would say it's a luxury to be able to have principles like that. I doubt that a refugee from the Congo or Afghanistan would have given up that job...:p

Indeed I like the mantra: "We're all Tories now"

Well as somebody else pointed out (not here, over the phone) my husband has an income...we'll struggle, but we won't go under.

I guess work isn't for everyone and one of the best things about England is that there's a choice. You can either work and give up on average 1/3 of your time in exchange for money or you can not work, have lots of time but not a lot of money to do things with that time... When I was on the dole public transport seemed so expensive, there weren't that many things I could do with my 'free' time.

I've been on the dole and I've worked, personally I prefer working as I enjoy my job and financial indendence, as well as having structure. Even if I won the lottery I'd find something to keep myself busy.

Actually, I do think that the skills needed to manage money are extremely important and should be emphasised in schools much more than they are now. It would go a long way to solving many of society’s problems.
I really cannot understand the level of debt some of my friends have.

Wise words. I wish I had the sense to keep money in my bank account.

Apparently it's a cultural thing... It was on some news programme recently, something about research showing that Europeans are very averse to debt and prefer to save and then buy stuff, whereas in England people like buy first and pay later...

It sounds like a huge generalisation but given the amount of people in debt in England there's some truth in it.

I think it's an age thing too...older people are very averse to debt (me for instance). I think it started with Thatcher and a lot of de-regulation of the financial industry....I'm bombarded with 'easy' credit junkmail...so far this week I've had about 6 inducements in the post for credit....I just shred it, and my shredded junkmail goes into the bottom of her rabbit and chinchilla hutches.....

I'm very debt-averse too - I was brought up that way and I don't think I'll ever change. I have a credit card, but I don't use it that much and I pay it off every month. I haven't been overdrawn in years.... I do have a reasonable income at the moment, but I know people who earn loads more than me who are heavily in debt.

Sorry BA for my previous incoherent rantiness.

I'm currently in job hell and it's not easy hearing that you've got the option of working or not in a job that'd actually pay you for overtime. (Dante's on a trip with some students. Friday-Sunday night, unpaid :( )

Best of luck fella, we need to catch up sometime.
